If we had Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill and ran no deep patterns for Hill, people would think our OC was an idiot. Well, our versions of that were Herbert, Guyton and Johnson. We cut Johnson and refuse to throw deep passes to Guyton. This was the most exciting explosive part of our offense last year and we have junked it. Our OC is an idiot.

And, as it turns out, after Allen, Williams and Guyton, we do not have better WRs on our roster than Johnson. Some would put Johnson ahead of Guyton.

Lombardi's system caused Stafford's results to diminish and he is repeating his history now with Herbert, who is actually a better QB now, but is being forced into making small window throws due to poor play calling and player use. It is not just me saying now either, though I have been saying it the longest.
I was deeply disappointed when they cut Tbilly. I had him ahead of Guyton because he seemed to be a more reliable catcher at the end of last season. They kept worthless guys like KJ Hill over a guy that had been explosive for us.

as the season has progressed it’s clear that the only problem with Tbilly is that he’s a deep ball specialist and this OC had no intention of going deep. We don’t do it so sure cut the guy.

Someone well versed in Shanahan scheme and knows how to implement it correctly. Someone mentioned Shane Waldron before he was hired by Seattle as their OC. But while he was versed in it, he did such a horrible job of implementing it with the Rams that he got replaced by Kevin O Connell in 2020.

Another troubling thing to me,doesn't Staley see what a dissapointment Lombardi has been and when the hell will he intervene.....This season is slipping away.....It's not likeLombardi had success in Detroit either.......You as good as your recent pass, and Lombard's looks pretty dismal.

That explains it then, Johnson got free for bombs because the Defense expected the Bolts to run up the gut for 1 yard.

Yep...every once in a while, Lynn or Stitch would let T-Billy loose to run that go route...either that, or Herbie said, "the heck with this up the gut stuff, I'm calling an audible for a pass...a long pass..."

I wanted to keep T-Billy as well but losing a 4th string wideout should never make or break a offense. I didn't like the Lombardi signing when I first heard it, it just felt strange and similar to when we hired Lynn just seemed destined to fail. All that said though I'm not ready to quit on Joe and that's mainly because of the terrific gameplans he had on offense for the Chiefs, Raiders, Eagles, Browns and parts of the Cowboys game. If our offense looks like it did in those games this week vs the Steelers then that means Lombardi's offense had 6 games were the gameplan was executed and that would be much better going forward.

Lombo DID have some effective game plans earlier this season...BUT...you can't rest on yer laurels in this game...you have to be able to ADAPT, IMPROVISE and OVERCOME, every new game, ADAPT to what the opposing D is doing, half by half, quarter by quarter...and lately, Lombo is so slow to adapt, he's starting to look a lot like Lynn...Lynn doggedly kept running the rock up the gut for nada...Lombo doggedly keeps dialing up short passes using bunch formations vs. a box-stacking defense...Lombo and Lynn--twin epic examples of stubborn coaches who fail to adapt...

So yes i also put Johnson ahead of Guyton but if Johnson was not picking up this offense either, then his best spot here is the PS right now , but he has since signed with the Raiders.

Now Gruden is gone but they are still running his offense so i dont expect Johnson to pick that up this season if he was having trouble with others. Took Carr 2 years to get it down. His is a pretty complex system. Maybe after this season and he is still on their roster, they will hire another HC whose system is easier. Who knows, who cares what the Raiders do.
Generally speaking, I would use targets and not receptions as a more accurate indicator of the player the coaches value more within the offense.

The team appears to be transitioning into using Palmer more than Guyton.

Since there is no question that the team has been misusing Guyton all along this season, I do not see this as any sort of evidence that Palmer is better than Guyton. I see this as additional evidence of Lombardi's incompetence.

I fault the coaches, including Staley, for throwing away a talented receiver like Johnson so that they could keep 3 QBs, a crappy WR like Hill, only 5 WRs overall and additional bad players like Pipkins. It is the job of the coaches to unlock the talent of the players.

It is poor coaching to force a system on players regardless of the talent and abilities of those players. When training camp began, we had a QB with a special ability to throw deep passes and two WRs that had an elite ability with their speed to gain separation on those routes to make big, game changing plays. We cut one of the players and refuse to take full advantage of the ability of the other two. That is poor coaching.

We have replaced the Anthony Lynn anvil of calling too many running plays (especially on early downs) with the Joe Lombardi anvil of not calling enough deep passing plays and misusing players all over the place within the passing game.

Some posters have noted that the offense is fine because it is producing at about the same overall rate as last year. They have forgotten that last year's offense was not firing on all cylinders. Its sickness was one of the reasons why Lynn was fired. The offense is sick this year too. The players are far more talented than the result that is being produced.

It is not a coincidence that the one game that produced our greatest offensive output featured two 40+ yard TD passes.

As I stated previously, our defensive philosophy is to prevent the big play and make opponents execute sustained drives against us. So, our defense is predicated on the notion that big plays for the opponent are a big deal. Yet, incredibly, our offense completely ignores that aspect of the game despite having players that are well suited for that type of offense.

I am disgusted by this year's offense, maybe not quite as much as I was by Lynn's scheme, but it is pretty close. And the most frustrating part of all is that it is so obvious. Some of the problems that I have been talking about I began discussing when Johnson was cut. Others (players being misused within the offense and lots of small window passing situations) I have been talking about since week 2. All of the problems are stupid, self-inflicted, and completely unnecessary.
