With the salary cap - you have to spend wisely. There are certain positions in the NFL where you can get good players for value - and you listed them all. That doesn't mean I want the Chargers to go cheaper with free agents as that really may not work. But it might mean you have to spend more for Nwosu for Edge, and pay less than what Kyzir White will get at LB for his replacement

This is where Kenneth Murray could be huge -if he could step in year 3 and be your LB.

Our EDGE play last season sucked, from Joey freelancing to cover everybody else to no one consistently stepping up opposite, poor EDGE play was the biggest contributor to our D’s biggest shortcomings, IMHO. You bring in your 2 players, we’ll maybe jump to 28th ranked D. I agree bring in FA IDL help, but if a top EDGE somehow falls to 17, no brainer over ever other option. And I really really like the top CBs and WRs this year, hope there’s a run on them.
There's only one Aaron Donald. Assuming that you get the next Aaron Donald @#17 isn't realistic. Find a different way to improve your EDGE. Playing better gap assignments is a good start (Bosa). Nwosu does a good job setting the edge. Find a pass-rush specialist (to rotate for Nwosu) in passing situations.

The Colts, Packers, Buffalo and the Jets have all expressed interest in Nwosu, who could still re-sign with the Chargers. Nwosu, 25, had a career high five sacks and eight TFLs as a first-timer starter in 2021 and may ultimately have to settle for a deal in the $7-9 million range. There's a chance Nwosu needs offseason surgery after playing through a torn labrum, but it's not expected to impact his free agent market.
Didn’t know about the torn labrum issue.

Yeah that's more like it. Depth matters too.

            That's a 4 to 6 month healing process. Shouldn't be an issue.

He must really think his late season push for a contract was good enough to trick TT. Watch him bite. I will lose it.
Chandler’s also much older. Players get their second contract based on their future projections, not on past results. I’m not saying Nwosu is that guy but I don’t know if Chandler is necessarily an upgrade either.

Will he be back in time for training camp? I appreciate him toughening it out last year but unknowns like this always drive me crazy.

Id be a fucking ruthless savage GM for this team. Im just so tired of doing things the wrong way.
I don’t think ruthless GMs last very long in the NFL. 50% of the job is having a good relationship with everyone. The other 50% is being able to evaluate talent and know when to let someone go versus “overpay” for a talent that could outplay the contract in the future. I think you need both to be successful in the long term. Guys like Dorsey end up kicked to the curb because players couldn’t stand him, despite drafting quality talent including Mahomes, Hill, Kelce, etc.

Miller just killed it for the Rams. Older guy. Im not talking about a monster long term deal. These guys as they get older....start to settle for 1/2 year deals. He absolutely has game left. And we are knocking. How many guys produce late in their 1st contract....only to get paid...and then show that the late surge was a fluke? Happens all the time. \

There is way more to it than your first sentence. Thats just a basic rule in the league. MIller was a huge get for the Rams. Be fine with either him or Jones.

You cant convince me these 2 are not good for another 2/3 years. Every player is different. You have to judge them individually not just by some general rule of thumb.

The poster child for signing a big contract then slacking off.

It was the third straight season that Lawrence failed to record double digit sacks since signing a five-year, $105 million contract extension before the 2019 season.

Lawrence registered 6.5 sacks in 2020 and 5 in 2019 after recording 25 sacks in 2017 and 2018 combined, prompting the Cowboys to reward him then with the richest contract in Cowboys history at the time.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
