I honestly thought he would turn out to be a good pick. Most WRs don't really see leaps or large progression until year 3 unless they're unicorns. By the way, do we know what happened with Mark Webb? Was he waived? I was high on that guy as a corner/safety staple in this defense.

He's on the practice squad. Last season, after being drafted, he made the original 53, but was put on IR on Nov. 27.

I guess I can still maintain my hope that he will eventually get called up and light it up in the secondary for us.

By that token, we can't really say Chargers hired greenhorns then. McCoy and Lynn had more years of experience coaching than any of them dating all the way back to the year 2000. Mike McDaniel was OC for one year in SF, McVay - 2 with the Redskins, LaFleur - 2 years combined with the Titans and Rams, O'Connell - 3 years combined with Redskins and Rams. None of them except for McVay have any coaching history before the 2010s.

I didn't include McCoy.
He had years under John Fox, four years or so as offensive coordinator.
It would have been nice if he had experience with another first rate head coach:
one whose acumen tended more to the offensive side of the football.

AL's experience was long, but basically as an rb coach at almost every stop: he bounced around every year or two years for some time.
A few years as an rb coach & assistant head coach, where one assumes his primary responsibility was still as an rb coach,
and then OC and interim head coach for one year under the fading Rex Ryan regime.

This isn't the type of experience I would want to catapult to a head coaching position.
The Chargers wanted a strong personality after milk toast McCoy.....their trend is always to hire someone the exact opposite as the predecessor.

It sure was better than Staley's experience.
