I think the culture is all wrong.

We were at our best with Boss Ross and Marty. Even on the outside we can see how different those cultures were. Leadership, responsibility and ownership were at the forefront, and they weren't just catch phrases. The coaches enforced them and made them effective. Players were held accountable.

When it's 72 degrees and sunny every day, and you can smell the beach in the air, maybe this level of discipline is what is required to be successful. We can't have these soft coaches like Norv and McCoy. It just won't work in SD.

    Just my two cents.

I think there is A LOT to this. Not saying that Marty or even Ross were perfect...but they seemed to do well (minus the playoffs for Marty, of course). I also do not remember this obscene amount of injuries under Marty. Granted the rules regarding practice, contact, etc have changed a lot since Marty was coach, but still.

We are way behind teams in using the top nutrition professionals and strength and training coaches. We do not have a team chef like other clubs. On the Jets the nutrition coach and the chef and strength and conditioning coach are go over diet needs for each player. Not in San Diego.

I thought I read that the Chargers did have a nutrition consultant of some sort. This was two years ago in MM's first year though, and this person was a holdover from the previous year.

No chef means they are not having individual needs met when they eat together but rather get a diet recomendation and have to choose to follow it.

MM said from the outset that they would be managing every aspect of the team, incl nutrition. I am not sure what's being done there, if anything, but it was promised.

But the lack of a chef isn't this team's biggest problem. It's not in the top 500 problems.

Maybe a team chef should set up shop in the Gas Lamp District at nights.

Spanos is making ham sandwiches for the team and deducting them from their pay checks.
