If you don't know the history of the team - here is a brief synopsis. In 1977, Eddie DeBartolo outbid Alex Spanos for the 49ers. DeBartolo was a millionaire businessman from Ohio (Alex never quite got over the fact that he was out-bid by an out-of-stater), and turned the team over to his 30-year-old son, Eddie DeBartolo Jr., to run. Eddie D hired Bill Walsh as HC and Carmen Policy as GM and in the pre-salary cap era spent lavishly to build rosters that dominated the NFL in the '80s and into the mid-'90s. The 49ers won five Super Bowls, their last SB win coming against the Chargers.

In the late '90s, Eddie D got caught up in a corruption scandal involving the governor of Louisiana. The NFL suspended Eddie D for a year, and his sister, Denise York, took control of the team. Denise and her pathologist husband (John York) weren't really cut out to manage an NFL franchise, and the team foundered. They turned the team over to their 27-year-old son, Jed York, to run.

Jed hired Jim Harbaugh, who built the 49ers into a winner - they went to the Super Bowl in 2012. But Jed started meddling in football affairs, which led to Harbaugh parting ways with the team after the 2014 season. Jed proclaimed to the 49er faithful that he was going to build a winner "the right way," or something to that effect. But within two seasons the 49ers were the worst team in the league, winning just 2 games under Chip Kelley in 2016.

Jed then hired John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan to run the team, and declared he had learned his lesson and was turning the team over to actual football people.

Today, Jed nor anybody in the York family has any role in the football operations of the team. This is how the franchise executive management is structured:

There is an ownership group with Jed, his parents and three minority owners. Jed has the title of CEO.

Then there is the executive management with Lynch and Paraage Marathe. Kyle Shanahan is the head coach, and probably is the person who controls every football decision. There are no members of the York family involved with football operations.

BTW, the 49ers have traded away their 2023 1st round (Trey Lance deal) and 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks (McCaffrey deal).
I do wonder how Tommy T would do without a Spanii in the room. That said, my guess he would still not be good at his job

Does John Boy really help with like the 3rd round selections or lower

It's funny how Charger fans want to blame Norv for the decline in player quality over his tenure, when all those decisions were made by AJ. You can criticize Norv for his failures as a coach, for being out-coached, but the team's personnel demise was not his doing.

That’s an assertion not based on facts. Compare the players on Marty’s last year to Norv’s years. Norv took the team further than Marty did his first year and then great players were replaced with trash.

BTW, it wasn’t only AJ calling the shots on players. Remember that John Spanos had ascended to the top of the scouting department and it is a certainty that he influenced personnel decisions as much as AJ. That left Norv out because there’s only so much power to share with ego’s and nepotism like that.

Lot's of speculation here on the inner workings of the Charger front office where nobody really has any insight.

There is no doubt AJ smith got cocky and liked the attention. I mean, one year he even said going into training camp 47 of the 53 spots were filled. So he started making terrible draft day decisions

He drafted Buster Davis but 7 picks later paid a crapload for Weddle. Now Weddle was very good - but maybe just take him with the pick

            He overpaid for Jacob Hester
He drafted Waters at LB who never played
He drafted Jonathan Crompton - who was terrible at Tennessee

So AJ did have a liltte of that "i have a stacked roster, I can gamble and take chances"

where good GMs like the Ravens or Reid with the Chiefs "just stick to the plan"

I have insight. Everyone here posting is no where near qualified to be an NFL executive. But everyone here is more qualified than any SPANOS. Hence the problem with the chargers.

The fact is, Norv Turner was a BAD HC and made this team soft in his tenure. You cannot convince me Norv had absolutely NO say in his personnel. Norv had just as much to blame as AJ and the downfall of the Chargers. Ever since Shotty was fired, this team has been soft compared to what they were. That is because of the HCs they have hired.

You are wrong. You can argue that Norv had his failings as a head coach and I won't disagree with you. But, the erosion of talent during Norv's tenure as head coach of the Chargers was AJ's doing, not Norv's.

Agree to disagree!!! Because, while I agree AJ had a lot of say in personnel, I don’t agree that Norv had absolutely no say in personnel.

This article conveniently overlooks the other 40'r cheating scandal when they felt because they were the 49s they did not have to abide by the salary cap like the other peasant teams had to abide by. So they signed every probowl player out there for these tiny contracts and told everyone they took less because they wanted to be a 40r and a winner but behind the scenes they were paying these players under the table big cash contracts. Because of this cheating they stole the Chargers chance to win a SB. I hate the 49rs more than any other team out there. I despise everything about them and do not want the Chargers to emulate any of their cheating ways, because unlike the 49rs who are one of the favored franchises and are treated with kid gloves, the Chargers would be brutalized byt eh NFL and media if they were to cheat like that.
