With a day to think about it, everything points to the back injury while working out.
LAC wanted Jerry to suit up.
      Lack of compelling improvement.
      Last straw.

Everyone knew he was a prepaid rental for the first half of the season. Might as well get something from him vs. Nothing. At this point they probably knew he was going to be a handful and not supportive for winning the rest of the season. He probably thought he was going to be traded and when that didn't happen he mentally checked out. They had to cut him.

That’s probably to big a task for Tillery to tackle.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Per Staley, they had “competing visions” for Tillery’s role and it basically became untenable.

The art of holding one's beer is a very important role. Usually while your colleague is tasked to do something very important such as flipping the burger on the grill, fighting a bully at the bar, or asking for a chick's phone number at said bar which led to said bar fight....you have to maintain a steady hold of can, not dent the can, nor spill any beer. Also important is not to drink from that can.

Tillery has managed to do all the above for opposing RB's while fighting off O-linemen.

Some NFL team saw that talent and made calls to us!!

Ardent, in that he might make a decent 3rd down guy?

Tepid supporters would be more accurate.

Mack called it a “weird situation”. Herbert said he and Jerry “were good friends”.

maybe he thought he should take over for Austin Johnson and the coaches said no it’s a competition and we’re bringing up Fehoko? Who knows man

A weird situation means something weird happened.
Tillery wanting to 'take over' for Austin Johnson is what you would want in a competitor.

                        The weirdness came after that...

Frustration over play time hastens Tillery's Chargers' exit

Jerry Tillery was already expected to be in his last season with the Los Angeles Chargers after the team declined to exercise his fifth-year option during the offseason. Tillery hit the NFL’s waiver wire on Friday after the team announced Thursday night they would release him. The defensive lineman was the Chargers’ first-round pick in 2019, going 28th overall in the NFL draft.

After Austin Johnson was lost for the year with a knee injury in last Sunday’s 20-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons, some figured Tillery would see his snaps increase. However, the Chargers were set to go a different route after signing Breiden Fehoko from the practice squad, along with practice squad player Joe Gaziano also making headway toward either being signed or being elevated to the gameday roster.

Staley noted that Tillery and the team had competing visions regarding his role moving forward.

“It just became clear that it wasn’t going to be a fit anymore,” Staley said. “We are going to give Breiden and Joe a chance to compete. With where we’re at and what we’re trying to do with our team — on the defensive line, our defense, on the whole team — trying to create competition and have guys earn their roles. That’s what we want to be here. When those things didn’t line up, we had to make a change.”
