We can see the light at the end of the tunnel. On April 1, 99 days after her initial diagnosis, my daughter was declared cancer free...with a small caveat. Initial and routine tests on her 3rd bone marrow biopsy show no evidence of cancer cells. Because of her age the pathologists have dug very deep and searched extra hard into the marrow and found would could be a few lingering cells, could be the remnants of dead cells that haven't been processed out yet, or could be dying cells. They aren't 100% sure, but whatever it is they're seeing it amounts to less than 1% and it really doesn't look like cancer. That's a long ways from the first biopsy that showed 70% cancer cells. This brings us to the final stage of her treatment. Rituximab. This is an anti-body drug, not chemo, that targets cancer cells. Its usually very tolerable regarding side effects. Its a drug that we were considering right from the start as we want to be aggressive and make sure this bug is dead and buried. In the past this drug has been used only in patients that have relapsed, but recent clinical trials have used this drug as a 1st line of defense and the results have been very good. It is a small sample size so far because we can't speed up time, but its showing a near 100% complete remission rate in every case to date. It will be given intravenously once a week for 8 weeks, then that's it. She's done. Just routine follow ups after that.
She's signed up for summer semester at Auburn and looking forward to getting back to her life. I kinda feel like she's a Freshman again and moving out for the first time. I'll miss her. Thank you all for following along with our hardship and allowing me to vent. Your thoughts and prayers and mojo and everything were tremendous and my family is very grateful. Unless something crazy occurs, this will be my last update. For anyone that wants a first person account my daughter took the time to blog her thoughts here https://hcl1223.wordpress.com/ She found it to be therapeutic. Share it with anyone who is fighting the fight and tell them "No one fights alone!". I'm glad you guys were on our side :youaretheman:sigpic
