    One thing is clear:

there are two organisations in the division who are willing to go to great lengths to win,
    and have the nasty habit of hiring high profile head coaches with previous success;

one organization who invents slogans about competing,
& consistently looks for newbies to turn into geldings,

and finally, one organization hell bent on creating drama (thank god for them!)

He knows what he is getting into:

      either a lucrative final payday,
or he sees something he can fix about Wilson and the offense (on top of the money)

      I'd bet on the latter.

Don’t drink that koolaid. He took the money, and he has a built-in scapegoat with Wilson for all the losing on the horizon.

Not sure why people are minimizing Payton's ability as a coach. He went to New Orleans after Katrina, not exactly a powerhouse and Brees was a big question mark with the shoulder injury when he got there. Payton built that team into a long term contender and his last season went 9-8 with guys like Winston and Taysom Hill as his QB. I think he went 5-0 with Bridgewater at one point and was known to adjust his offensive scheme as Brees got older.
If anyone available this off-season will be able to get a lot more out of Wilson it is likely Payton. The guy is a very good coach, there's about 20 years of NFL experience to back it up.

I think Payton and Wilson deserve some benefit of the doubt that they can turn it around, which is worrisome for us.

And if Wilson tanks, Payton and the Broncos won't hesitate to go out and find another QB. These aren't the Chargers we're talking about, they won't settle.

They probably won't go cheap on top end assistant coaches either. They appear to be very willing to be aggressive in building a winner.

Well they know that coaching matters.

They don't clutch pearls over late first round picks like Tillery that come and go. Exceptionally good coaches are hard to find...you need to pounce when you can.

Wouldn't exactly call this pouncing: REPORT: Sean Payton Was The Broncos Third Choice To Be Their Next Head Coach

                    "The #Broncos last few weeks:
                    — Zeroed in on DeMeco Ryans.
                    — Secretly tried to lure Jim Harbaugh from Michigan.
                    — Negotiated a Sean Payton deal.
                    — Tried to hire Ryans again.
                    — Finalized the hire of Payton as their new coach. https://t.co/tlMLnjdM9u"

I'm getting Jimmy Johnson to Miami(minus the picks) vibes from this whole thing. Most likely similar results.

If that report is true it makes sense. Payton was the only one that cost significant draft capital to get, it doesn't mean he's a lesser option.

Ryans was probably low-balled, Harbaugh probably asked too much in salary to get out of his sweet gig. Payton isn't sloppy thirds, but its to be seen if he was worth the trade. His success is tied to Russell Wilson.
