Randy Mueller of The Athletic on Kellen Moore:

      A difference in philosophy

Sunday provided an example of why Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy wanted more control over managing the game, and thus his offense, when he moved on from former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

With the lead and the ball in the fourth quarter vs. Miami, the Chargers were running a no-huddle, up-tempo offense and snapping the ball with tons of time (once more than 20 seconds) left on the play clock. My suspicion is Moore kept the hammer down to keep the Dolphins off balance, but the Chargers should have been winding the clock all the way down in between plays and shortening the game.

I’m not saying this is why they lost. I am saying that is a philosophical approach that McCarthy reasoned was not best for winning games in Dallas. There are times when stacking stats or pushing to score at any cost is not as valuable as just running the clock. McCarthy got the lead against the Giants on Sunday night and took the air out of his offense just for that reason.

I'm wondering if that was even Moore's decision--or if Staley told him to run a no-huddle, up-tempo offense in the fourth quarter.

The view from the GM chair includes an explanation for a low-scoring opening week, what to watch with young QBs and more.

We missed Ekeler today. Drop-off in our RBs was too great. Doesn't matter because Tennessee ate the Chargers lunch on third down. You will not win a football game being 2 for 14 on third downs.

Third down efficiency was terrible today

            The titans were 6-13 - almost 50%

So the play calling or lack of running game put them behind the chains
the OL was terrible at key times
            Herbert was not good either
            Receivers can't get open

Defense - had its moments - but they still had some bad moments too

I credit the Titans HC, and GM, and defensive coordinator. Excellent job all game.

The game was lost the last 2 possessions of the 4th quarter (before the game tieing drive). Up 4 pts Moore had a chance to put the game away and both drives he runs the ball on 1st and 2nd down for no gain. We had been moving the ball easily through the air but he stubbornly stuck to the run.

I warned people Moore has a problem with game rhythm he runs when he should throw and throws when he should run.

Those drives were infuriating. That was when u need killer instinct. This game should have been over before the last 2 minutes. Defense finally stepped up and the offense couldn’t take advantage. We play un-complementary football

Ironically, he was fired for not running in those situations and letting the D win the game. But McCarthy has probably the best D in the league so I can see why he’d want to rely on them.

Dallas also had premium RBs. Ours was inactive.

you were there. Did it look like the Chargers were having success running the ball? It sure did t look like it to me on TV

It looked pretty ineffective live too.
