Not happy enough with Brees going to another team to win a superbowl, so lets repeat futility and do it again. Watch PR win with another team while we become Buffalo west with a rookie mobile QB, no thanks. With this crazy logic we should have gotten rid of Fouts before he was over the hill. LT for that matter too, lets just get rid of every Charger great. The logic on this board is hilarious at times.

    Answer one question:

Does anyone think there is even a remote chance this would happen seriously? NO NO NO

There are allot of problems, but PR is for sure not one of them. I would rather see the Chargers move to LA then trade the best player on the team by far since LT. Thank God Telesco doesn't listen to this board.

I like the idea of Rivers following the path of Elway. There is still time to build a team around him and I'd rather have a savy veteran around that team to lead than a wet nosed, no playoff experienced young gun. Its a great topic to debate Q, but I say keep him.

Its funny that the two prime proponents of 'it's fine to get rid of older, big dollar guys but make sure you replace them with someone better' are now advocating trading Rivers for magic beans, a wish and a prayer.

          LOL

I think that tells you all you need to know about those guys.

In regards to asset management and rebuilding, wouldn't it make more sense to try and trade Gates? We have a talented backup that (i think) is ready to take on more reps. Gates's value is at a high right now, after struggling through 2 years of foot issues. We could try to move Gates for either young talent and a pick (or picks) or a ton of picks. In addition, we could utilize any cap savings to resign Butler.

It sucks to see stars and fan favorites move on, but this team has a poor history of 'selling high'. (Actually, very little history of doing it at all). We need help in a ton of areas and a lot of things would have to align exactly right in order for us to be contender by the end of Gates's contract (2015 is last year). So would you rather roll the dice that we will be contenders by the 2015 season and potentially see Gates walk? Or, try to move him and expedite the rebuilding phase with more picks?

Note: You will NEVER 'replace' Gates. He is one of the best of all time. I understand that, so please don't respond with Green is not as good as Gates posts.

Well, I'm gonna take the blame for opening up this can of worms. I didn't mean to evoke the ghosts of Norv, Fouts, or Fluker when I decided to create this ill-advised thread.

Fact is...Rivers ain't goin' nowhere. Now, that may or may not turn out to be a good decision; but I suppose I'd rather see Rivers retire a Charger - without a SB ring - than trade him away and watch him hoist a SB trophy elsewhere. Perhaps that's a bit selfish on my part, Charger fan first and all. But I don't take any pleasure in knowing that former Chargers like Brees and (HG)Harrison have a Super Bowl ring(s) as members of the Saints and Patriots.

I'm confused as to wether you think getting younger is the right move or continuing with mediocrity is.

5 games into the season and only 1 draft pick has shown he can be productive? I assume you are talking about Fluker but I think most would agree KA has shown talent already, impressive since he hasn't really had a role until M80 went down, and will play a role in the future. Teo has only played in 2 games due to injury so it's a relatively small sample size, even compared to the other rookies, but there is definitely reason to hope. Our other three draft picks are a 3rd string QB, an IRed CB (I'm sure it's TTs fault for drafting someone that would ever get hurt), and an OLB that everyone knew would be a project as soon as he was drafted.

You say the offense isn't young but our only current starters over 30 are Rivers, Gates, and Hardwick. Floyd is as well, but I think it's fair to say that WR production hasn't suffered significantly since he has been out. Hardwick probably only has one more season in him, and will definitely need to be replaced sooner rather then later. Who knows how long Gates has left, but with Green progressing I don't see TE as a glaring hole come Gates' retirement. Rivers can play at least another 4 years baring significant injury. Do we have holes on offense? Sure, but I don't see age being the cause of them.

Again, we have completely overhauled our entire roster before in only a few years almost completely in the draft. I don't see why we couldn't do it again. You even point out that spending lots of money in FA hasn't worked for any team in recent history, right after you say that's exactly what we need to do to become relevant again. So what do you think we should do? Other then fire TT and MM for not turning this team into the '85 Bears in a single off season.
I don't consider bringing in players like Freeney, Dunlap, Rinehart, Marshal and Woodhead as making strides to make this team younger. All of them are 28 which was older than the average age of our roster last year. You could throw in Cox and Ohrnstweeter at 27 and say that really isn't making us much younger either.

Norv was given such a raw deal in all three head coaching opportunities, its difficult not to sympathize. Genius after all. If he coached for 30 years, maybe he could hit .500, all he needs is a chance.

You can't have a team comprised of first and second year players only. You have to have some vets sprinkled in.

Raw deal?..are you being sarcastic? Norv was handed a Superbowl caliber team here for which he acknowledged when he was hired.
