So, who should we have as a backup?

By the way, he is not getting $5.5 mill. He is getting $3.5 mill, which is pretty cheap for a decent backup QB (remember a mid career vet minimum is $1 mill, so any vet is going to be 2 to 3 times that). His passer rating is usually in the upper 80's (one year) which is close to starting quality.

The $5 mil average comes from his next season salary of $5 mil, which is somewhat unlikely to see. He is an insurance policy in case we don't sign Rivers. There is no way we will keep Taylor at a $5mil base salary as a backup QB, unless Rivers is on a 1 year deal (unlikely). BUt if we can't resign Rivers, then $5mil as a base salary, while we look for other options, is not an unreasonable amount.

Team better not F this up. Melvin has earned a big pay day, he kept his mouth shut in that BS McCoy rookie season where woodhead was the goal line back and no TDs. He's been at the top of the league performance wise. Sure some missed games but in my perspective he's proven to stay healthy enough.

Can't afford to look cheap while fighting for LA. Rivers can't win with out a stud RB (LT, Mathews one good year, Gordon), Flash is offensive MVP and is severely underpaid compared to the production he has provided. Part of this contract is paying him for past performance. If your going to draft a RB in the first round, and that RB performs excellent, you should pay that RB. If your going to this BS of rotating and using up your RB and never giving them a second contract don't take the first round talents. If we didn't pay LT we would have jack shit, we don't have championships so enjoying LT for as long as we got to is something cheap ownership/management better not rob us of now.

Super Bowls are transitory. What's a Super Bowl appearance to a string of 8 & 8 seasons?

You're overlooking one thing - he has a contract for this season.

Please show me his durability and excellence. He has 1 season over 4 ypc, has had three knee injuries, misses 3-4 games in all but 1 year. He has 1 top 10 season...ONE..... and wants to be paid like he is a top 3 RB. He hasn't drastically outperformed his rookie deal at all, let alone enough to be demanding this shit while still having a year left on his rookie contract.

He has an option that was picked up I thought. Anyway he has majorly out performed his contract, he has earned a new one.

Have the Chargers made a statement regarding this yet?

He is third in scrimmage yards since his rookie year in the league. He is second in TDs to Gurley is what I saw and zero his rook season. Considering he has missed games and not a very productive rookie season aren't these stats even more impressive. He had the highest PFF rating in the league when facing 8 or more men in the box. He has been getting better and better the more we have asked of him.
