The Chargers tried him at DT at first, but when he didn't make the team and they wanted to move him to OG, they had a sloppy roster that they could afford to let Dielman sit and learn for a season. We had a high draft pick who was playing fairly well at Fanoti (sp?) ahead of him.

Tillery is a very different deal.
    1) TIllery is a modern #1 pick, while Russ Washington was a 1st round pick back in 1968. Back in 1968, teams really didn't have scouting into the process that it is now. Often teams would draft high players sight unseen, because in the late 1960's, scouting staff's were pretty small. A lot of 1950's and 1960's players got moved around when they were drafted. Now it is exceedingly rare.

2). If you look at Tillery's PFF grades (game by game), it is not that he is just plain dreadful, which is what pff hints at with his overall grade. His game by game breakdowns show that he flashes some ability as both run stuffer and pass rusher. He was inconsistent, which is not exactly unheard of for rookies, especially those who didn't practice much in the offseason.

If we turn him back into an OT, after playing his college career at DT, it is the first sign that the front office made a huge mistake in drafting him. IF he had been unable to play both run and pass defense, then switching him might be an option. But it hasn't, flashing some ability in both run D and pass rushing. Tillery is just inconsistent and unable to put enough good plays together.

3). We have a pretty loaded roster, so the idea of taking a guy and letting him sit all year while he learns a new position seems unlikely.
When drafted number 28 your second tier with the potential to be a solid contributor. Maybe we need to stop looking at him as a potential superstar and that he's just a solid rotational player who contributes to the overall defense. When it's taken Mike Williams 3 years to show that he can play we are really expecting way too much for a defensive lineman taken at 28 to show potential until maybe his second or third season. We'll know for sure what we have after the third season.

Barring injury, we'll have a very good idea in 2020 whether Tillery has the heart & composure to be a quality DL.
We know he had the physicality.
He flashed at ND as one of the country's best. He gets a pass in 2019 for shoulder surgery, limited camp & training.
That was then. Time to earn his 1st rd pick money.

I read the Yardbarker article about 11 year veteran tackle Jason Peters being available, and Pipkins being able to grow under him.
However, that window to acquire him may just have slipped thru the Charger's hands because their other starting tackle just tore his Achilles heel. Opportunity missed. The Chargers had the cap space to get him. Probably too late now.

LA Chargers News: Jason Peters potentially became more valuable to the Philadelphia Eagles. We are halfway through the month of June, the LA Chargers have ...

Pip did play in 13 games last year. Someone posted that if a rook QB is going to grow, he needs to start. And yes, I also noticed an improvement from Pip's early starts to his play by the end of the season.

Pip played in 13 games, started 3.
              He was learning, got better.
Lack of upper body strength was listed as an early issue. That will have been upgraded.
Campen was a solid starting OL and a quality OL coach with a rep for developing talent in GB. He should accelerate Pip's improvement.
Working with three established pro bowlers will set a good example for him.

No insult intended. It just seemed a good idea to keep it accurate. I had made the same assumption but decided to check.

I sure as hell hope that Campen is stickler about hand placement. Our OL get their asses kicked enough without become more sloppy. Not sure how anyone can think sloppy hand placement is a good thing. I hope he spends more time on it, not less.

                        Welcome back Steve !
                        Don't shoot the messenger.
I am just quoting James Campen.
He doesn't want to reconstruct techniques that Olinemen have used.

When healthy, Pouncey was impressive. Accurate & successful.
Schofield, Tevi - ineffective reaction to stunts, speed. They've been replaced. Turner & Bulaga have solid creds.
                          Feeney got lost too often.
Pipkins was a development player that improved with experience.

I'd like to see the '20 OL engage with speed & accuracy. Take the game to the D with more zone concepts, QB movement. Put some aggression in OL.
We weren't very good at catch when the D took all the initiative.
