Niners RB is by committee and why I'm saying we don't need a big RB like Henry but its nice to have one 215 to 220 lbs. There are RBs that size in this draft with the top guys like Dobbins, Ettiene, Taylor, etc.

A good run game with Rivers passing ability,... Well we have seen that and we will better off than the Titans.

Just need the OL and DL.

And don't forget about Zach Moss...5-10, 222...good value around round 3-4 or so...

Not to nitpick, but a couple of those passes were pretty bad, behind the receivers - but they should have been caught.

The early drops were on the money. Not sure how tight a target you define as on target, but they weren’t diving for the ball, lunging for the ball, reversing direction for the ball - it hit them on the hands in stride. Now every pass the entire game wasn’t on target but we can say he had a decent day after all.

If by on the money, you mean behind the receivers were they got a hand on them, but did not make a difficult catch, than yes. The announcers even commented on one of them. But in the end it did not matter because O'Brien may be the only coach who can out Andy Reid Andy Reid.

Not only bad that they found their franchise QB, but Andy Reid has absolutely owned the division. 32-10 in the AFCW since he took over in 2013. 27-3 since 2015.

Meanwhile, we are busy hiring first time head coaches in McCoy and Lynn and putting the team in a soccer stadium.

The immediate future could very well look like the browns over the last decade. Drafting a new "franchise" QB every other year and wondering why we can't find the right guy. Hope that doesn't end up happening. Need to build the team from the trenches out and hire some legitimate coaches.

Since 2016, the division has been bad. Aside from one good year from the Raiders (2016) and Chargers (2018), the rest of the AFC West has stunk. This is how the Patriots and Colts dominated their division all those years they were winning their division. KC is just feasting on a weak division like the Chargers did when they had their run on the AFC West from 2006-2009.

John Spanos became the president of football operations in 2015. The team has had 3 losing seasons, and one season barely above .500, out of the 5 years with since he took the position. It's not a mystery who pulls the strings.

So what's the narrative on Russell? Can't win the big game unless he has a historically elite defense? Just like Brees?

I thought the great QBs were supposed to carry their teams to championships, not rely on the rest of their team being great. Between Brees, Rodgers, and Wilson they have 38 seasons as a starter, with 3 combined SB rings. 3/38, and two of those rings were accompanied by the best defense in the NFL.

I believe all 3 QBs are some of the best to play the game, but 3 rings in 38 seasons should make it clear that it takes way more than a QB to win. The NFL and sports media have done a masterful job of convincing the average football fan otherwise though.

Its the QBs that make the biggest difference simply because the importance of position.

You dont usually contend for superbowls with a Geno Smith caliber QB. It takes a franchise QB like Russell Wilson.

Chargers are much better off next year with Rivers at QB, not Tyrod. Even if they draft one this year. They should start Rivers if he resigns.

all true...... and remember that Reid has dominated our division and averaged around 30 points per game even with ultra game manager Alex Smith at QB...... its about his brilliant simple system, that requires very fast players and a mobile QB....... to get the defense flowing one direction then to run or throw to a wide open player the opposite direction...... very simple because QB only has to see which way defense goes..... one read offense..... and speed makes it work...... speed gets runners or receivers wide open with only one player at most to beat..... look at how many times Smith or mahomes throws to wide open receivers?.....
key to making mahomes look closer to average is keeping him in pocket so he cannot extend plays allowing his receivers to get even more wide open.... he is not that accurate from the pocket....... unless guys are wide open....


The Chargers biggest problems have always been ownership...... Klein and spanos both suck as owners.....

Helps to have a good o-line, be bigger than a lot of NFL linebackers these days,....shoot outweight DB's by 60# running down hill. Gonna be interesting to watch old school smash mouth football vs high powered offensive football.

Classic contrast of styles in the AFC Championship game.

Now that this weekends games are in the books, I was revisiting the idea about running the ball (effectively) and balanced offenses are keys to success in season, but moreso in post season.

looking at in season stats only:

The number one running team, Baltimore, not only got beat, but soundly beat by Tenn, who in aggregate is probably about #4 in rushing.

The # 2 team in running the ball, SF, soundly defeated the vikings, who were statistically on par with Tenn in attempts/yardage aggregate.

The first of these games intrigued me the most:

Baltimore, who by far and away, was the top rushing team, (averaging 60 yards/game more than #2 san fran), ran to the tune of 180 yards and totaled 530 yards in the loss. (yes, some was late game yards, but they earned those yards regardless). Was the stat of the game turnovers? 2 INT and 1 fumble lead to 14 points. Not insurmountable when you realize Baltimore had 77% more Yards (530 to 300) and 74% more total plays (92 to 53). They won TOP, doubled up the titans on 1st downs, and edged them out on several other game stats. Yet to me, it didn't seem like the Ravens were ever in control of the game. The game was dictated to them by the titans from the first quarter.

So....turnovers? In a nutshell, yes - but maybe a secondary question to ask is, the #1 running team in the NFL lead by a QB who is their leading rusher (as in #6 leading rusher in yds in the nfl.) the "new generation/new NFL/new era" of dynamic offense lead by a running QB, was stopped cold. For the second year in a row I may add.

On a side note, the other prototypical, new generation, running QB's team was soundly tromped in KC. Blame the defense, but the Texans Offense could not keep up even being spotted 14 pts by a blocked punt and KC fumble on the 6 yd line. I never knew KC was noted for their overwhelming defense. Now, I don't believe Houston is the better team, or should have won - but think on this: Patrick Mahomes isn't a "running" QB but closer to a traditional QB who has great vision and outstanding mobility. But in essence, he is not part of the new era of QB's. He's more like a faster Arron Rodgers.

Very small sample size, but maybe this brave new world of running QBs taking over the NFL is a little premature.
