Reports were rampant this weekend that the college football season is likely to be canceled, due to unrealistic and complicated NCAA safety requirements.

But that doesn’t mean your Saturday afternoons will be devoid of football.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk, if college football opts out of Saturday, the NFL is more than willing to opt in.

“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL likely will move games from Sundays to Saturday, if college football doesn’t proceed this season,” PFT’s Mike Florio reported. “It’s unclear whether the games would be broadcast, streamed, or distributed on a pay-per-view basis, but the league likely would backfill the vacant Saturday windows with NFL content.

“The easiest approach would be to treat each Saturday like the late-season tripleheader the league staged in 2019, with a game at 1:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 8:15 p.m. ET. That would trim the Sunday slate by three games each week.”

Though, as Florio points out, there are some contractual hurdles the NFL would have to clear to make that happen.

“The league would need a one-year dispensation from the broadcast antitrust exemption, which allows the NFL to sell TV rights in a league-wide bundle but prevents the NFL from televising games on Friday or Saturday from Labor Day through early December.”

On Saturday, the Mid-Atlantic Conference became the first Division I league to cancel its season due to the virus.

There won't be a NFL season either. The NFL is just delaying the announcement to get any money they can get off merchandise, advertising, Hard Knocks, etc... and such only to shut it down.
That's what I think anyways. I am surprised the NBA is playing though.

If outbreaks are minimized within teams, then they'll give it a shot. Bets are off as to whether they can make it through a full season.

NBA is doing it but their situation is unique and not useful for the NFL. MLB is a better model. They’ve had some small outbreaks and cancellations but are getting through. I think the NFL will find a way to slog through without fans.

The season happening is up to the players and coaches. They have to want to stay healthy and make it a priority in their lives. No bars, no strip clubs, no big parties..... They have to isolate and keep contacts to other players/coaches/family that are also serious about social isolation.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Big Ten cancels season. If other power 5 follow, NFL will fill the gap on Saturdays.

Wow. That is sad. Schools like Michigan and Ohio State treat football like religion. The kids at those schools are going to miss that part of the college experience

Canceled college season might benefit the Chargers.
assuming we get a low pick, less film for evaluation of prospects makes the draft more of a crap shoot, making high picks less valuable.

I dont see how it benefits anyone as far as the draft.

I suspect he means that if there is no college football season then players won't have the same opportunity to improve their draft stock. Consequently, players that could have shined in 2020 and gone top 10 in the 2021 draft, like the Joe Burrows type player that was a mid round prospects pre-season 2019 but went #1 in 2020, may be available with less prestigious picks. If the Chargers record does not net them a prestigious pick, the lack of a seasons worth of evaluation increases the possibility of finding a diamond in the rough with lesser picks.

Ya essentially, maybe someone with an economic background can say it better but in a draft following cancelled college football season, picks generally lose value because there’s less film on prospects.
so top 10 selections are even harder to hit on, there will inevitably be more top 10 guys that have no business being drafted there (more than usual)
thus more talented guys dropping to lower first.
The best talent evaluators will be rewarded moreso
it’s also good that we don’t have to evaluate the qb position as much as other teams

how else could the draft be different without college?
