    Great question.
Agree with Maniaque 6; we will never know but for argument:

I think TT would have selected Herbert at #5 for this reasons:
1.- I never predict a TT 1st round selection and I wanted Tua.
2.- The Murray trade, to me it feels like TT was very close to trading the 3rd pick to select Herbert anyways (with Det or NYG) so might as well get what TT and AL believe is another elite player.
3.- From what I have seen from TT historical 1st round picks; they are player with of games under there belt, I feel Tua does not check this box because of the game he missed due to injuries

Good solid reasoning, especially No. 1:nod: I went with Tua, because that is who I would have chosen. And that doesn't mean I don't like Herbert, I do. I just liked Tua a bit better.

I read somewhere that TT was questioned on witch QB he really wanted.
His answer was intriguing : anyone of the top 3.

Classic politically correct response. Now that he picked Herbie, he's not going to throw him under the bus by ranking the top three in order. TT could have also said:

"We had all of those three very highly rated"
"All three of them are tremendous football players"
"We are very happy to have Justin Herbert on our team"

Sounds a lot better than, “I preferred Tua, but Herbert is an ok consolation prize. I was badly outflanked by the Dolphins, really, I thought they weren’t interested in him. Otherwise I could have easily traded up but I didn’t think we needed to. But Herbert was projected to us in most mock drafts anyway so I figure for job security it’s better for me not to miss out on him in case he turns out to be good.”

You know somehow I don't think that's how Telesco feels.
He may have said whichever of the three was available but I got to believe with the injury history that Tua was probably the last of the three on his list.

66 Mike Sainristil CB - Michigan

Very near of the truth, I think.
But TT could have said that he would have drafted Herbert with the 1st pick overall.
It would have made more noise !

Concur. Herbert was his top rated player in the draft.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

i would have liked it if the Charger's somehow managed to get Javon Kinlaw......i think he'll clearly be better then Derrick Brown.

I think he would have taken Herbert, which is who I took if offered both. Faster (4.68 vs 4.85), taller, stronger, stronger arm, less injuries, none of which can be taught. Add in more starts/experience, won on a team not as talented, won in 3 different offensive systems. I'll fix his footwork and mechanics and that will fix his accuracy. or thats my theory

I've never seen a good QB from Bama since The Snake. I don't trust my lyin' eyes on the kid made of glass with all the vowels because he sure does look good in Crimson games

I'm not disagreeing with the 1st paragraph, but doesn't the same logic apply to Oregon and 1st sentence in the 2nd paragraph to Hebert and Fouts? Or any two colleges for that matter?
