I don't believe Herbert will start any game in 2020 (and that is not bad for him IMO)

I don't believe he is ready yet; he needs work as a passer IMO
Taylor right now is a better thrower than Herbert is.
1 year working with his mechanics should do him well (no need to mess his confident)

2 videos (only plays; no commercial or wasted time between plays).
Utah and Wisconsin games from last season (40 min and 37 min)

Good thing about this is he’s walking into a perfect situation. We just parted ways with PhillyRiv [ ((( ] and we are changing the offense to help the next future QB succeed.

He’s no Patrick Mahomes at throwing and he’s no Lamar Jackson at running, but we can spend the next year trying to mold Herbert into the perfect quarterback. Just absorb the playbook and build a rapport with the receivers.
^ this. Think of it...if the Bolts would have passed on Herbert, and he still develops into a solid, above average starter, they would have endured years of "should have, could have" comments that they blew it...even if they did get a great player like Simmons...the pick of Herbert makes total sense...he sits behind Tyrod for a year, learns the system, gets practice reps, gets two seasons of pre-season games, then starts in 2021...

U could be right, Wood, but don't forget about the "Loyal Lynn" factor that kept a healthy Lamp from cracking the starting lineup...Lynn may feel he owes his Buffalo Buddy, Tyrod, a full season...and if asked why Herbert can't have a start, he may say he "doesn't want to mess with the chemistry at QB"...If we are 0-5 or 1-4 with Tyrod, Herbert might start game 6...might...if we are 2-3 or 3-2, Lynn will probably argue "there's a lot of season left"...if we are 4-1 or 5-0, I just about guarantee Lynn will pull the "chemistry" card...

Either way you spin it the offense is going to be a lot of work this year with basically a new OC and a new QB and many new faces on the receiver side as well as oline. Watched the interview of Steichen today and he was a bit nervous just thinking about all the new pieces in the puzzle he has to put together. Would be hard enough for a seasoned OC vet let alone making work with a new QB.

I'll be watching Stitch closely to see if he's up to the challenge...if not, as I posted earlier, Pep Rally is a former OC and could be the backup plan in case Stitch stumbles...

I think Herbert will play at any point the Chargers fall below .500 after game 6. If that never happens, you have to go with Taylor.

The thing I really don't like when I hear everyone talking about when to play him is it sounds like that is the priority. Instead of, he has things he needs to accomplish, then he will get on the field.

In a regular season, the offense is installed in OTA's and minicamps. TC they do a quick refresher of the install, and then get right to competing against each other for position.

This year, how are they going to do that. It doesn't look like any of the traditional offseason is going to happen, and everything will have to be done in TC.

I saw a local interview with Rivera once where he talked about how much it takes to get a rookie ready to start day 1. If a position player comes in, don't miss any (significant) time with injuries or holdouts, then they get about 1000 reps by the time the season starts, if they are a high achiever, then you can be can be ready to play. Presumably, QB is on more or less a similar time scale. Harder positon, but a guy who probably has more awareness of what the offense is, and there is going to be some carryover from passing concepts no matter what offense he has played in.

But this year, he is probably going to miss at least half, probably 2/3 of the snaps he would have otherwise gotten, if they play at all. I would also say he is not a great candidate for being ready earlier rather than later. Played in many offenses, but probably didn't truly master any of them. Didn't play in a pro style offense, they were all college style offenses, so that adds more to the learning curve. He has mechanical issues to fix, although that to me is mostly about footwork.

can he????? I hate to start making decisions about what my expectations are going to be before the guy has even gotten his playbook, I don't think the coaches even know exactly the offense is going to look like, just because we added a couple of new coaches, and with new QB's (Taylor and Hebert) and new RB's and TE, and the fact that we have some rookies... I think everything is a work in progress.

I just think it is pushing it to presume anyone really knows. Each player will react to the situation according to the gifts god gave him. Some players get the same opportunity and excel from day 1. Some take time. Some never adjust. We will have to see what happens to Hebert.

I wont be surprised if we use taylor and herbert at the same time in some packages both are dual threat QBs
