I thought the team claiming him would automatically inherit the whole contract guarantees and all. But that’s why I asked because I didn’t know for sure. I still think he hurt the team by being a place holder for a position he wasn’t going to fill anyways. With bulaga cut not only a roster spot clears up but also the chargers go after another RT to fill the need last offseason, massie, leno, or moses would’ve been much better than norton and would not have broken the bank either.
you see NFL teams hedge their bets all the time in case another player has injury concerns. Believing that Bulaga would pull thru was putting way too much faith on pipkins and norton to fill in in case he couldn’t and I don’t have that kind of faith. But clearly the chargers did we saw the results and Herbert felt them too.
nope.
If you trade a player, they inherit the contract, minus anything that was awarded at signing or earned previously.
If a player is claimed on waivers, and that is only for a player with 5 years or less experience, a team does inherit the contract. If they are a vested vet, they beomce a street FA.
NFL teams aren't stupid, so no team is going to take on a contract like Bulaga had. Any team would negotiate with him. Again, there may be offsets in place in the deal that allow the Chargers to recoup the salary he gets from the new team up to the full value. But other NFL teams get to see the details, so they won't take on such a deal.
You can wipe Leno off the list. WFT kept it close to the vest, but they intended to keep him so they could cut Morgan Moses, which they finally did. Leno was never going to be available. Massie has missed a lot of time lately with leg injuries. So not only is he only a slightly better player, but he misses time and is only a matter of time until he is another Bulaga himself (injury history wise).

Yes but if we trade a player, any amortized bonus cap amount left from earlier signing bonuses get hit on the original team’s Cap at the time of trade, right?
Regardless, betting on Bulaga was a really bad bet - because job one is to field a starting team.

Leno was a long time bear, he got cut by the bears after the 2021 draft, the WFT signed him up after about a week that he was on the street. He was there for the taking as was moses. I’ll take your word on massie I didn’t follow up on what he did with the broncos. The Commanders recently extended Leno to stay in Washington but he was a bear all the way thru the draft and only got cut after so washington couldn’t “keep” him because he wasn’t on their team, they had to bring him in after the bears cut him.

Leno signed for 5mil with WFT, they got a starting LT for 5 mil. Moses was available until July 27th 2021 and finally signed a 1 year 3.6 million deal with new york plus incentives that could drive the money up to 5 million. So the Jets got a starting RT for 3.6 million last uear and he ended up playing LT for them after the big fella got hurt. The chargers rolled 10 million from last years cap into this years. They could have done more to shore up RT considering the year that bulaga had in 2020, but they chose not to spend the money. Massie was there too even tho he didn’t pan out, the other two started the whole year and the chargers could have easily had either one for around 5 mil easy.

Taking a look at the Chargers draft now after the combine....Would be very happy IF either EDGE Jermaine Johnson or CB Andrew Booth Jr. falls to pick 17 probably pull the trigger on that if one of these guys are on the board. More than likely Jordan Davis, Jameson Williams, Trevor Penning, should be there when we pick so IF we are going all in on Justin Herbert you either draft Penning or Williams... If you are going all in to fix the lack of ability of our D to stop the run you probably go Davis. If you are going best player on the board and either Booth Jr. or Jermaine Johnson falls to 17 its probably best to go best player available and grab either the CB or EDGE player.

draft wise the chargers are sitting pretty once again, strong prospects at positions of need will be available in almost every single round at their draft position. That isn’t always the case but it also points to the glaring issues with personnel on this roster. I just hope they don’t creat more holes like they did last year with hunter henry.

I’d take Johnson over Fatty to improve the D. more I’ve watched and thought - i don’t want him. Reminds me of the Herbert draft - all the early negative press told me no but as I watched his tape and then his combine, i just knew he was destined to be a golden stud. I also knew Tua would flail.
I just don’t like short QBs or tall DTs. They are tacking up wind their entire lives.

Is? Its past tense, two years ago. This forum was 90-10 against drafting Herbert, go read up on it if you need to.
