Gotta be able to defend the entire width of the football field.
Hurts, Kyler, Patty, RPO types leave no option.
We do not play modern football.

Chargers mock draft analysis: Kaiir Elam would provide needed cornerback depth

          By Daniel Popper Nov 30, 2021 10

As the Chargers have sunk back to mediocrity since their bye in Week 7, one concerning area of regression has been their pass defense.
Through the first six weeks of the season, the Chargers ranked eighth in defensive EPA on dropbacks, according to TruMedia. It was a strength of Brandon Staley’s defense. In the five games since the bye week, however, the pass defense has turned into one of the team’s biggest weaknesses. The Chargers rank 28th in defensive EPA on dropbacks since Week 8.
What is to blame? Primarily, it is a lack of depth at cornerback.
Improving that depth should be a priority for Staley and general manager Tom Telesco this offseason. And that is why Dane Brugler’s Chargers selection in his first 2022 mock draft — Florida cornerback Kaiir Elam — makes a ton of sense.
The Chargers lost both of their starting cornerbacks — Asante Samuel Jr. and Michael Davis — in their Week 8 home loss to the Patriots. Samuel Jr. suffered a concussion and missed the next game. Davis pulled a hamstring and missed the next two games. Davis returned in Week 12 and has played in the Chargers’ past two games. Samuel Jr., though, suffered a second concussion in Week 11, and he is now out for an undetermined period of time.
On top of that, veteran special-teamer and depth cornerback Ryan Smith tore his ACL in the Week 9 win at the Eagles. He is done for the season.
Tevaughn Campbell — a 28-year-old former CFL player who is in his second season of regular-season NFL action — has been forced to play significant snaps amid all the injuries. And he has struggled. Campbell is a raw talent with size, speed and inside-outside flexibility, but with limited experience and an unpolished game, he is prone to errors. Missed tackles, poor positioning and losing leverage have all led to big plays in key moments in recent weeks.
Inconsistent cornerback play is leading to porous pass defense. Campbell is not the only problem. Davis — who signed a three-year extension in the offseason — has not lived up to his contract so far this season. At 32 years old, Chris Harris Jr. is not the same player he once was. Harris, who is on the final year of a two-year deal, is only playing in the slot right now, as the Chargers do not trust him on the outside. The cornerback depth is a glaring roster hole as the Chargers enter the home stretch of this season. Elam, who has great size at 6-foot-2, would provide another piece for Staley to implement in his coverage schemes.
There are certainly other positions the Chargers could target. They currently hold the 20th pick in the 2022 draft. They need a right tackle and general offensive line depth at all five positions. They need to bolster their defensive line, especially with Linval Joseph set to hit free agency at 33 years old. They could also look to add an impact edge rusher opposite Joey Bosa. Uchenna Nwosu is slated to be a free agent, and the pass rush, overall, has not been consistent enough. The Chargers rank 22nd in pressure rate this season, according to TruMedia.
But defending the pass is the most crucial part of playing defense in today’s NFL, and that starts with quality cornerbacks up and down the depth chart — even though a more dominant pass rush would aid the coverage.
If the Chargers let Harris walk, they will need to fill his spot at slot corner. Elam has played more nickel this year as a junior. The Chargers have been cross-training players to play that position inside — which Staley calls the Star position — since the spring. Samuel Jr. can play inside, so he could take over that spot and play a hybrid role, staying outside in base defenses and moving inside in sub packages. Mark Webb has also been training at Star, and Derwin James plays there in certain packages. So they have options.
The overarching key, though, is adding more talent at corner, regardless of positional fit.

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
          The Wasted Decade is done.
          Build Back Better.

I like both players, but Davis and Dean are luxuries at this point. Get your IDL's in free agency and depth LB in the draft.
Must address CB, EDGE, and RT with rounds 1-3.

Agreed that those are 3 areas of supreme need but I would not call Dean "linebacker depth" This dude will be a stud for 10 years IMHO. Also, getting our IDL through FA or UDFA has not worked so well, but I will say it's OK. However adding Davis would be quite an upgrade. That mountain of a man can clog some shit up that ain't clogged this year......

Safe to say that DT from Georgia will be long gone before we pick.

Double down on CB next off season.
Ahmad Gardner-CB with the 1st rd pick.
JC.Jackson-CB with a big free agency contract.

We thought Murray would be a stud too so ......still waiting for that.
I liked the Murray pick. Hasn't worked out as of yet and getting a little impatient.
