This is a video of all of Merriman's sack in a Chargers uni, you kind of get a glimpse of how much Jamal Williams factor into the defense as a whole in passing situations. Look at how Big Jamal pushes the pile. It forces the QB to roll out or stay still, its those immeasureables that impacts the defense. In truth, if he forced him out and you don't have the pass rush and you can't get him; it would've been just another offensive gain. So in that nutshell, you need the edge rush fire power too. Therefore, since the fire power are much higher in pay scale, their draft position would correlate too imo. Personally altough you can make up for the position with numbers and schemes, but if you have the pieces in place, these are the guys that can take you to the next level.
Lastly, just have to give Shawne Merriman his props, such a master off the line and more importantly in his mastery in snatching the pivot foot. His feet tackling is just oddly good, so good at getting that pivot foot if not both feet to go and bring the QB down. Shout Out, Lights Out.

any interest in Sturdivant @all ?? do you think Bru McCoy gets drafted ?? would you bring him in as an UDFA ??
I'd say no way Rice lasts to round 5.
And yes and yes to Studivent and McCoy. I like Rice over them though and admit it's because I've seen a lot more of him. I've seen most of USCs games. Only a couple UCLA. Tennessee once.
It's still early in the draft process. You seem to watch a lot more college ball than I do.
I watch it but don't spend my whole days on it. I do a lot of catch up later as I'm more into the Chargers season til they are out of it....which won't be long now.
Then I'll catch up. Haven't been to many drafts sites. And when I did, the ones I like have nothing to speak of on them now anyways.
1. Mason Taylor TE LSU
2. Quinshon Judkins RB Ohio st
3. Kyle Kennard Edge So. Carolina ✓
4. CJ West DT Indiana
5. Don'te Thornton WR Tennessee
6. Zah Frazier CB UTSA
6. Jarquez Hunter RB Auburn

Its like learning a foreign language...at first its all gibberish...and then you can pick out a few words...and then finally, it starts coming together...and just in time for the draft, your fluent...
And then after the draft, for me anyway, my brain takes a big ol' dump, lol...and within a few weeks, Ive forgotten half the names...
And then it starts all over again late fall...not counting the big names, of course...I pay attention to those...but prospective mid to late rounders? I just wait for guys like Beach to herald them, and then I check out the ones that sound interesting.Lone Bolt's Final Mock
Tyler Booker G, Josaiah Stewart Edge, Cam Skattebo RB, Mitchell Evans TE, Jamaree Caldwell NT, Isaac TeSlaa WR, Ahmed Hassanein DE, Craig Woodson S, Eli Cox C, Kalel Mullings RB

is fun to watch, is slippery and has short area quicks, is a jumpcutter that can't drive 55, as once he hits 60, he don't slow down for nuthin'.... yards after contact and missed tackle rate are impressive, is a bit of a hybrid receiver w/a Warrick Dunn compare, and prolly falls within the Chargers sweet spot/wheelhouse, somewhere in the third round ??
think the temptation is to get someone like him to replace Ek, and.... am ok w/Kelley in that role if we re sign him, and.... RB by committee has its advantages, albeit am more after two backs that can carry the load, as we will still have the Dot going forward as well.
guess you could put him in your round three cluster if you fancied him as such, and personally.... would put him in as the caboose of the bunch (behind Trey Sermon).

My comment is not specific to T'Vondre Sweat, I but more general as this thought is pretty near consensus.
Do we ever stop and think may be this perception may be most always wrong? When the world keeps saying something is valued for more than we think it is, at what point do we believe the world is right? I don't know - I do know I have wanted a dominating NT for 15 years and in at least 10 of those years the dominant "smart thinking" was somewhere between NTs are no longer vital to they are anachronistic and of minimal value. A couple years I specifically lobbied for a NT with Pick1. Then I watch football on Sundays and teams that have a dominating NT are destroying the interior of the OL, wreaking havoc, and causing all kinds of plays to be stalled, rerouted and diverted.
We have average talent on our IDL, imo. We would benefit greatly from a great NT.
I do think we need a great CB more now though. A Sauce Gardner is the special kind of player I think of.
If you can get a 2nd for Bosa, take it. I'm skeptical but then again the Bears got a 2nd for Mack so ... lol

Usually later in the day or at night....thus the USC games. They play Sat nights.
And yes, beach is a year round draft guy so I do get some names to check out from his lists lol.
Not sure he even watches the Chargers, just college ball....which is fine for my check list.
Taking some time off during these coming holidays so I'll catch up. Working is over rated lol.
I'll be checking into retiring here soon as well.
And agree, after the draft I'm done with it for a while and take in the NFL season.Last edited by Boltjolt; 11-21-2023, 03:37 PM.1. Mason Taylor TE LSU

At least most are considering WR now. Its such a deep class.....that even if QJ was a hit....im drafting from this drafts strength. I do think Herbert likes bigger taller WRs. He has an amazing high game and Rome and Coleman are big targets. Huge catch radius's. All those guys are close imo. If we end up top 10 Bowers makes sense as well. But keeping this offense firing around Herbert is a good start for success. Sort of laying off defense at the moment as im not even sure what sceme we will be in next year. Staley has to be a goner.
Whether Staley is gone or not... a team (especially ours) could always use CB and pass rushers.
My first round cluster is full of CB's and OLB's... then Odunze. I'm probably the only one that would pass on Bowers. TE's just don't make my Round 1 clusters... ever. Kyle Pitts didn't even make it. I'm just Nutty that way.
Protect the QB
Run the ball
Play great defense

And with that...a guy like Bowers who is almost always open...like Gates was....would be Henry on steroids for Justin. And Henry was quite the 3rd down specialist. He had a knack for 1st downs and i think to some extent Herbs misses him. Im a back end round 1 guy myself. Top of round 2. Same with RBs for the most part. But if i see HR hitting potential? At RB or TE? I take that swing. I felt that with Gibbs and Kincaid. Kincaid is just a huge WR+. He is starting to really emerge as one of Allens favorite players. Bowers is a much more polished prospect. I think he is a 1K yard receiver with Herbs. A series extender. A better 1st and 2nd down chain mover than many of our runs. I really like what he does as a safety valve. Pitts was all freak no football IQ. Its easy to dominate in college and then not get it at the next level if you dont have the mentals. I liked Pitts a lot...but there have been so many players who catch passes at a high level in college...not able to make it on just pure athleticism alone when they get to the pros. So im extra critical of those guys now. LIke QJ. I dont feel that way about Bowers.
My only concern with Bowers is health.
