But we also have to hire Harbaugh. That in itself is a long shot. I was just giving the only reason imo we would be running the same defense next year when they clean house
It’s beyond a long shot. He is under contract with Miami as DC - he cannot take a lateral job move with another team. what is your long shot - that Miami fires him? There’s no restriction except money stopping an NFL team hiring Harbaugh.

I would much rather have guys like Michael Penix Jr, Jordan Travis, Jayden Daniels and possibly even Bo Nix. These guys are straight gamers. I like Drake Maye as well.
Other than Drake Maye, Williams is much more talented and gifted than the other quarterbacks you mentioned. Bo Nix and Michael Penix, in partifcular, look like they'll be about as good as Marcus Mariota in the NFL. They benefited from being in wacky offenses in college.

I'm not saying Williams will be as great as Peyton Manning, but I see a lot of similarities at the end of their college careers. In Peyton's senior year fans felt like they were beaten over the head with hearing how great he was, so they began to root against him. "He never won a national championship. He never beat Florida. He got his ass kicked by Nebraska in his final college game. Ryan Leaf and Brian Griese are winners." That's what was being said about Peyton by his haters at the end of his college career. I know; I was one of them.

I’m not denying Williams talent. I am questioning his mental fortitude because it is very important when entering the NFL. I just don’t think he’s going to be able to take the heat when it comes.

Not what I meant. Let's call this hypothetically speaking. You took it too literal

I was giving an example of why it would be the only reason we would be running the same defensive scheme when Staley is fired.

Other than that we will be running another scheme.

However...Miami doesn't have to fire him. We can ask permission to speak to him and they can say yes or no but thought he might want to work with Harbaugh again as he has at SF and Stanford.
but usually you ask permission to talk to a coordinator for a HC job but sometimes it's for same job.

Its all moot if we don't hire JH and chances are we are running another D scheme.

Out of curiosity, why? Because he cried after losing a game? Admittedly I thought he should have done that in private, but I don't believe it's that big of a deal.

I go back to Peyton Manning. He acted like an entitled jerk right after Charles Woodson won the Heisman Trophy in 1997. Peyton acted like somebody came into the Mannings' home and stole his birthday cake. A month later he was criticized heavily after playing like garbage in a blowout loss against Nebraska. I see so many similarities to what is going on with Caleb Williams. People are tired of hearing about him.

If you rephrase the mental fortitude and think of it as a willingness to question what went wrong, then I think you have something. Williams has a ton of talent, but he can be better. And he is going to have to change his game to become an NFL elite QB. But if he makes the commitment to take his game to the next level, he can be as good as any of the elite QB.

Williams has some sloppy mechanics he needs to clean up to be a real consistent NFL QB. He throws a lot of passes off his back foot because he has such a great arm. Fine if you are not being pressured and you have the time, but those passes are going to be off target in the NFL when there pass rushers in his face (see ND game). Willaims throws a very nice ball when he steps into it, if he does it all/most of the time he is going to be tough to stop.

Williams is all over the place with his feet and his release. It's just hard to throw the ball where you want and be accurate if you are moving the release point around when you are being pressured if your feet and arms aren't working together. Mahomes and Rodgers both have really good feet, so when they do the funky stuff with their release point, it is just the release point, everything else is mechanically pretty sound.

Williams also needs to learn to throw the ball away and not try to get a big play on every down. Is he going to run around like it is schoolyard ball against fast NFL pass rushers? Micah Parsons? Some times, sure. But he does it a LOT. He needs to learn when to hold it and buy time, and when to get out of the plays and just regroup. Ask the Pats how that worked out today.

I don't think he is one of the great read and react/decision maker type guys either, but he does make some good reads at times and with his arm talent, he doesn't necessarily have to be the best guy at picking the best read. Plenty of HOF QB threw a lot of passes to guys who were covered and got away with it because they could put the ball wherever they wanted and it turned out OK.

Ahh, I’m all in favor of ditching the Fangio scheme - in particular Staleys complicate machinations atop the Fangio scheme. I think elite offenses, the ones we need to be able to beat to get where we want to go, have solved how to attack the Fangio design very effectively by exploiting the seams and large zone gaps under his “lid”. MIA has good defense stats on paper but I suspect thats a lot to do with who they have played. The couple games they played elite offenses were not as good as all of the Jets and Giants games they have played.

Staley made Fangio harder for defensive players to execute it to achieve what he thinks is increased disguise and confusion of the offense. History asserts his modifications confuse the defense more often than the offense so they are paradoxically a net drag on the Fangio design. But Staley mapped it out on paper and he’s certain it works great - hence he needs to go in particular.

He can cry after a game… This might be silly but the comments about going home to cuddle his dogs is not what you say after to you lose a tough game. I want to hear things like, getting back to the tap and practice field. What happen the next 2 games? I know 1 of the games was Oregon, but UCLA stomped’em. I know USC’s D was bad. Look, I could be wrong, but this is just my gut feeling on the guy from what I’ve seen.

I dont care about the crying or his dogs. For me its his allegedly saying he wants part owner ship, and had a list of teams he wants to draft him and if not he may not come out. If thats true, thats a red flag. Who asks for part ownership? lol.

He isnt the next best thing since sliced bread but he is a good QB prospect.

He can go cuddle his dogs all he wants, I just don’t need to hear it. If that’s the first thing on his mind, I would start to question his commitment at the next level. Especially after a tough loss.
That makes me dislike him even more saying he wants part ownership and thinks he can decide where he goes.
Like I said, I do not question his god given ability.
