Dexter did have 6.5 sacks his freshman year... prior to drawing double teams consistently during So/Junior years. But if you don't think he can push the pocket, put Bosa @ 3-tech and slide Nwosu to DE during pass situations. Hell, why not be creative... rush Dexter up the 1-gap (ocuupy 2 OL) while you blitz a MIKE. Stunt him with Bosa/Ingram... Clemson used to do it all the time with Ferrell/Wilkins...
Is everyone really OK with 35 year old Brandon Mebane taking on double teams. Is this the best we can do...? Dexter ain't your grandaddy's 1-tech... he's more versatile than anyone's giving him credit for. Does everyone really want Lawrence pushing Feeney back into PR's lap as a Patriot...?
Dex's value in the passing game isn't sacks....it's creating sack opportunitys by pushing the pocket in the QBS face and eating up blockers....just as you said....but you can't convince some of these folks...
outside of Quinnen 'n Christian the three best combo run/pass rush defenders on the IDL are Dex, Khalen and Gaines.
Greg Gaines' pressure percentage when pass rushing is the same as Tillery's and better than both Dre'Mont and Ed.
as advertised/mentioned ad infinitum, both Tillery and Dre'Mont have terrible run stop percentages, and w/Renell Wren not far behind the both of 'em (no thank you x3)
would also add that in terms of run stop percentage, Trysten Hill is right there w/Mr. Ed (who ain't half bad against the run btw)
when it comes to "pass rush productivity score" per PFF, Dex again handily outscores the both of the kings of pressures.... Tillery and Dre'Mont.
simply put.... Dexter Lawrence is more likely to put pressure on the QB than (your) more highly touted IDL "penetrators/disruptors."
will also add that Greg Gaines has a higher score than the all of Trysten Hill, Simmons, Saunders, Oliver, Willis and Omenihu.
the only IDL that outscore Dex are Rashan Gary, Wilkins and Quinnen.
Im not a big fan of PFF but its Funny how we can see the same list and come to different conclusions. Dex didn't even make it on the QB pressure % list.
I'm not against DW but at 345 +lbs, he just simply overpowered lesser college OL that won't happen as easy in the NFL.
All four of Clemson's DL will be drafted so that DL was just damn good as a group.

and how would that group have been without Dex in the middle.... ??
his pressure percentage was just below 13 percent.... 33 pressures on just over 250 pass rushing snaps.

Probably still pretty good.
Dex isnt on this QB pressure list so where are you getting just below 13%? Im not trying to doubt you but where are yoiu getting 250 pass rush attempts that arent listed? I do see the 33 pressures. He would be on the list below wouldnt he? Im sure Clemson opponents attepted a lot more than 250 passes and i acknowledge he probably wasnt in on every one of them.
EDIT...Looking at team defensive stats, Clemson opponents attepted 29.8 passes per game which equals about 385-390 in 13 games.

your modern defensive football team just resigned a guy that the stats say our defense is worse statistically w/him on the field than off ??
re: the DTs.... the stats don't so much take into account for if and when Ed was double/triple teamed, or about the QB bailing out early cause the DL that broke free has another 50-60 lbs on him than the "disruptive/penetrating" variety.
and there is the intangibles part of the equation.... if Wilkins drops, everyone raves 'bout his intangibles, and wonder if both Gaines and Saunders aren't the better get over Lawrence, given some of the questions that have been raised 'bout him ??
never easy GMing, and.... am def eliminating many of the DTs based on stats/run defense.... or lack thereof.
