What are the names of our "scrub" DL?
That aside, I don't give a S*** about his past stats. He has to compete with the DL depth this year.
This is not last year's roster.
Are you saying that if Staley keeps Tillery, he is institutionalizing mediocrity and that the best LAC can do is 9-8?
    Bold prediction!

yeah, not sure how relevant that/he might be, as have always thought that Tillery might be better on the edge than inside, albeit plenty of peoples thought he would do well in a five man front, but that hasn't really played out to date.... do you think there is a position on the line that optimizes his talents/skill set ?? and know you've been supportive of his took kit, and rather that you think its more mind over matter w/him @this point ??

Red Bryant was out playing DE because he was impossible to hook plain and simple. That was a big thing back then, because everyone Seattle was playing was trying to run outside zone as their base run, and Red was out there to prevent the run from getting outside and turn the RB cutback into the pursuit. But he was pretty much the 1st guy off the field on passing downs. And back then Seattle was all about situational subbing their DL.

Tillery had some good snaps when he was playing SDE for us when Bosa was hurt. A lot of teams were looking at him as a 34 DE back when he was drafted, because of his length. A lot of teams love the big, long guys as 34 DE. He also has the speed to turn the corner some. He is never going to be an every down edge player, but he can line up there and still be effctive on run downs and add some pass rush from the edge.

Tillery has a the athletic ability to play all along the line. But he needs to figure it all out and put it together and time is running out. He has some pass-rush ability, but he got a lot of sacks last year because he is a middle-of-the-road pass rusher who got a ton of snaps. Cut his snap count, his production will plummet because he is just not efficient.

Every DL is better in a 5 man front than in a 3 or 4 man front. Most NFL teams prefer blocking big on big, and if they do, then there is no way to double team anyone if the DL has 5 guys and the OL has their 5. BUt if you play a 5 man DL, it is going to hurt your pass coverage. 5 man pressures are always a man short in coverage and they are often kinda weak because the defenders have poor leverage because of their alignment. I do expect us to play some more 5 man DL looks this year, but that is the same reason the Rams did. The Rams were weak at ILB, and so are we. The Rams, however, had a much stronger/deeper DL group than we do.

To me our DL starters are SJD and Johnson as run-stoppers and Fox for our IDL pass rusher. Tito makes the roster as a developmental guy with the draft capital just used on him (probably not active on game days for the first half of the season barring injuries). The last 2 spots come down to Covington, Fehoko, and Tillery IMO. Fehoko is by far the best run stopper of the group and hopefully after last season the coaching staff values that ability. Last spot then comes down to the best pass rusher to rotate with Fox and unfortunately that’s still Tillery.

At least this year there are actually battles for spots on the defensive side of the ball, here’s hoping that leads to a much better product on the field than what we saw last year.

According to Athlon Sport, J. Tillery is not a Chargers anymore.
We don't see his name on the roster.
Their depth chart has A. Johnson, S. Joseph-Day and C. Civington as DT's starters.
The backups are B. Fehoko, O. Ogbonnia and J. Gaziano.

The Chargers don't have an official depth chart at all but Tillery is listed on ESPN and OurLads depth charts.

Because Tillery is a below average pass rusher from the DT position and one of the worst run stopping DTs in the league.

Tillery is on the Chargers roster.https://www.chargers.com/team/players-roster/

The Chargers depth chart won't come out before final cuts are made.

Lindy's still has him on the Chargers.
