Chargers add CB J.C. Jackson
Los Angeles gets Jackson on a five-year, $82.5 million deal.
I had Jackson, 26, as my top free agent in this year’s class and thought he’d push $19 million to $20 million per year. Instead, his new deal comes in with an annual value of $16.5 million, which is outside the five highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL.
Jackson’s 22 interceptions over the past three seasons are tops in the NFL. His 47 passes defended are tied for second. Jackson’s ability to play man coverage should give the Chargers more scheme versatility.
The additions of Khalil Mack and Jackson should give the Chargers’ defense a big boost. And they didn’t overpay to land Jackson.
Grade: A-
Chargers sign WR Mike Williams
Williams returns to the Chargers on a three-year, $60 million deal with $40 million guaranteed.
Williams had 1,146 yards in 2021, which ranked 11th among wide receivers. And he’s only 27 years old.
Williams has averaged 16.1 YPR in his career, and his 17 catches of 20-plus yards last season ranked ninth among wide receivers.
The Chargers’ goal should be to build the most efficient, explosive offense possible so that they can take advantage of Justin Herbert on a rookie deal and try to compete for a Super Bowl right now. Williams helps them move towards that goal.
Having said that, $20 million per year is a big number. Williams is now getting paid like a top-five wide receiver in the NFL. I don’t mind the Chargers being aggressive here, given that they haven’t had to pay Herbert at the top of the market yet, but they’re banking on Williams’ best football being ahead of him.
Grade: B
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
The Wasted Decade is done.
Build Back Better.

Is there cap space left to add another CB like Rasul Douglas? He’s kind of a one yr wonder so I’m hoping he’d be cheaper than some of the other CBs.Tom Telesco’s Results in 9 years as Chargers GM:
- 69-74 record
- 0 division titles in 9 yrs as GM
- Worst record among all active GMs with same tenure
- 6th worst winning percentage among all active GMs overall
- 2 playoff wins despite elite QB all 9 yrs
- Team still has the same weaknesses (Oline and run defense) that it had when hired as GM in 2013
- Consistently puts together horrible depth, expects starters to never miss games

Maybe they are trying to get Bulaga to take $4m salary or something with incentives -- granted, with that back, that still might not be the best move.
