    Oh wait. That's JC.

At least opposing QBs won't have to think about it for long, 'cause here comes Joey and Khalil.
Some other post talked about how Staley wanted his Cover 2 Zone and look how this is different. No - no coach wants to be forced to play only deep drop zone, its like saying he prefers players with only 1 leg.

he HAD to play a lot of Cover 2 zone with the DB group he had. He couldn’t play man. He had to play them conservative to avoid the huge TD plays and smart OCs carved it up. I am looking forward to a much more aggressive attacking D this year.

He's not dicking around on offense either.

      Hey Norton.
      Hey Pipkins.
      You wanna start ?
Kick it up in run blocking AND pass pro.
      We play modern Harball.

It won't take long for LAC's opponents to assume that running is preferable to dealing with our pass rush & coverage.

He isn't really deliberately tempting teams to run. Staley is just aware that it is a lot harder for teams to sustain drives and score a enough points to win games, if they emphasize the running game. So, stopping the pass first has to be a priority. But if you cannot execute run D, even if it is hard for teams to sustain drives, they will still eventually score (see last year).

Van Noy and SJD sure are more scheme friendly that Kyzir and Tilleey.

Checkdown #1: Receiver covered by JC
Checkdown #2: Receiver covered by ASJ
Checkdown #3: Slight window of room on receiver covered by Vato...but WAIT! QB gets ready to throw...but waited too long! Bosa and Mack for the sack!

Yep...and with Mack at the other end, Bosa FINALLY has a REAL pass-rushing DE to take some of the pressure off him...no more 9-10 sack seasons...15 does sound doable...

The Eagles game immediately comes to mind.
talent wise, we should have dominated, but they insisted on running down our throats.
                    A bit demoralizing.

Staley is not going to move away from his light box. It is the foundation of his defense. And to fully execute it, the DBs have to play a lot more press man than they did last season. I think Staley just had to adjust the coverages to match the players they had and they didn’t have many man corners.

Agree! Adjusting coverage accordingly will be key. You obviously don’t want press man during a running play, otherwise the WR can use the coverage against the DB and block them more easily.

It's not just the coverages. To make up for fewer guys aligned in the box, Staley's D asks the DB to come up and fill the gaps on the outside. If a WR blocks down, the guy who was matched up vs the WR has to take the blocked man's place. It is something guys learn to do, but since it was very different from what Gus did, some guys don't do it with much enthusiasm. In Bradley's 8-man front, only the SS is up on the line and ALWAYS was a force player (almost always) and the rest of the secondary was asked to just pursuit. There where a lot of times when that missing player was key to allowing big runs.

The point of playing the tite front with a lightbox is to take away those chunk plays and force the opposing offense to drive the length of the field, play after play. If the run D gives up big chunks, then it is just as bad as if you gave up big passes. The run D has to get better. It doesn't have to be amazing, but it does have to cut down the number of big chunk plays it allows. Make teams drive the length of the field.
