The first step that needs to happen is that play calling duties need to be removed from Lombardi right now. We cannot start the season 1-3 with losses to JAC and HOU when we should be starting out 4-0. For those concerned about continuity, I would simply note that a blindfolded chimpanzee throwing darts at a dart board could do better than Lombardi has been doing with the play calling. To say that Lombardi lacks feel for play calling understates his play calling ineptitude.
The second step, when the team should fire Lombardi, is debatable. I do not think Lombardi adds anything, so I think the best move would be to fire him now. While this would require a sharp transition to a new play caller, I still favor this approach as it removes the disease that is Joe Lombardi from our team right now. Based upon the play calling to date, I also think this option carries very little risk.
The next best option would be to remove Lombardi during the bye week, but the concern is that if we wait that long, the season will be lost. I do not think we need to duplicate DET's 1-6 start in 2015 before firing Lombardi as they did after 7 games that year.

All he would do is send Guyton deep as our #1 WR and pass every play
Like defenses wouldnt stop that lol.
We could commit to the run too if we didn't suck so bad at it. Me thinks we rank last.

We need to use play action pass more on first down, but run the ball less on first down. I do not mind us running on second down and 7+ yards (i.e., when defenses do not think we will run the ball), but I think we should just about never run the ball on third down or fourth down and short yardage (i.e., when teams think we will run the ball). We are very bad at running the ball when opponents are expecting the ground game.
Lawrence, while improving, is not yet on Herbert's level, so it is understandable why they would choose to run the ball more. They also have two good RBs, whereas we only have one.

We went deep a few times today and Palmer had a 45 yard catch and run.
