The first step that needs to happen is that play calling duties need to be removed from Lombardi right now. We cannot start the season 1-3 with losses to JAC and HOU when we should be starting out 4-0. For those concerned about continuity, I would simply note that a blindfolded chimpanzee throwing darts at a dart board could do better than Lombardi has been doing with the play calling. To say that Lombardi lacks feel for play calling understates his play calling ineptitude.

The second step, when the team should fire Lombardi, is debatable. I do not think Lombardi adds anything, so I think the best move would be to fire him now. While this would require a sharp transition to a new play caller, I still favor this approach as it removes the disease that is Joe Lombardi from our team right now. Based upon the play calling to date, I also think this option carries very little risk.

The next best option would be to remove Lombardi during the bye week, but the concern is that if we wait that long, the season will be lost. I do not think we need to duplicate DET's 1-6 start in 2015 before firing Lombardi as they did after 7 games that year.
Removing him immediately also sends the message that they are serious about changing things.

        That is an excellent point.

Nice post. Notice how Doug Pederson committed to the running game today even though he has a potential star at quarterback? Would be nice if we did that, especially with our banged up star quarterback. But, yeah, why bother committing to a running game?

Better a clean break. In the corporate world, standard practice is, you call in the guy or gal, tell them they're fired, they hand over their office key or any security-related cards, you hand them their severance check, they box up their stuff, the security guard escorts them out the building. You do not demote them and give them a chance to wreak havoc on the computer system for revenge, OR to sew dissension by badmouthing management to other employees. You minimize collateral damage and say "adios."

i bet Chain couldnt do better than Lombardi, let alone the blind chimp.
All he would do is send Guyton deep as our #1 WR and pass every play

Like defenses wouldnt stop that lol.

We could commit to the run too if we didn't suck so bad at it. Me thinks we rank last.

I have zero issue with us not running the ball on first downs or in traditional running situations. We do not run the ball very well at all, so I think we need to use the ground game as a change of pace. The problem is that unless we are trailing by a large margin, everything we do is a short pass or a running play, so we are very easy to defend since defenders can ignore the field more than 17 yards past the line of scrimmage.

We need to use play action pass more on first down, but run the ball less on first down. I do not mind us running on second down and 7+ yards (i.e., when defenses do not think we will run the ball), but I think we should just about never run the ball on third down or fourth down and short yardage (i.e., when teams think we will run the ball). We are very bad at running the ball when opponents are expecting the ground game.

Lawrence, while improving, is not yet on Herbert's level, so it is understandable why they would choose to run the ball more. They also have two good RBs, whereas we only have one.

No. All we would need to do to stretch the D is to send Guyton deep about 2-3 times a game until they back off from LOS...

Chain says he wants to throw on nearly every play. And im sure Guyton would be our #1 WR. sending a guy deep 2-3 times isnt going to back them off.

We went deep a few times today and Palmer had a 45 yard catch and run.

Since Guyton left the locker room on crutches, I think the Guyton needs more playing time thing is kind of moot at this point.

I would like us to be a pass-first team. Then use the run as a change of pace. We've seen what Herbie can do in crunch time in many games in a pass first offense. Our problem is all those 3-and-outs due to us going run-heavy and heavy on the passes behind the LOS, and heavy on the short stick route passes. All vs. a stacked box. Mostly easy to defend.
