They were smarter. What they did back then is routine now. Turning salary into bonus and restructuring contracts.
They can thank Carmen Policy, a pretty good wise guy who understood the rules and how to legally get around them.

Sure, routine now. But then, no other team was doing what he did to create that team. Just think if we had, the SB would’ve been different. In context it was cheating.

No other team put that kind on emphasis on the cap as a way to win a SB. Nowadays teams hire accountants who specialize on the cap. And there was no
salary cap minimum back then. So a lot of cheap owners wouldn't spend on the players. The money was more important. We had this guy Fred Dean,
a nightmare for the offensive line. Instead of paying him, what happened? He ended up a 49er on a SB winning team. Don't blame the 49ers, blame
the stupid owners that did not appreciate good players. The Cowboys, Raiders, Steelers all did right by their players and ended up winning multiple SBs.
Things have changed now with big money coming from TV contracts and NFLPA being much stronger advocate for the players.

I read on this forum - maybe FoutsFan - forget who - but it wasn't that
they were paying players under the table so it didn't hit the cap at all.

Granted that is wise guy stuff but not the same as what the Rams or saints do

They kicked him out because he was a convicted felon tied to corrupt gambling. NFL was always freaked out about gambling just in general and a gambling related conviction of a powerful owner was a bridge way too far for them at that time (if not forever).
Just say you don't understand what happened with that situation. I get it not many people fully understand it, or want to understand it. This wasn't just missing a cap deadline.

I am not discounting the gambling issue but either one of these was a bridge too far. He did both.

he gave cash to his players. But that was not a bone of contention with the NFL, as it was rumored but never proven. He was thrown out for illegal gambling.
Nothing to do with salary cap violations. The team was not sold. It remains in the family. Eddie was kicked out and ownership passed to his sister. The
architech for the innovative way to get around the cap rules was not Eddie but Carmen Policy, his right hand man.
That is not even close to what happened.

He signed all pro's for a fraction of what they would get on the open market. He paid them the rest of their salary, cash under the table. If they were offered say a 10 million a year deal he signed then for 2 million then gave them 8 million under the table. When they were asked why did so and so sign for you at way less then they were offered for other teams they said well they just wanted to be a 49'r.

So when they were busted the NFL put all that money on their cap in dead money. They lost draft picks and Policy was forced out. The 49'rs for the next decade sucked because their cap was full of dead money, they could not sign FA and basically had to field a practice squad.

I cannot believe nobody followed this, I know the NFL fought like hell to hide this but come on.

That is it exactly. A lot of 49'r fans here trying to gloss over and excuse what happened.

The Niners were guilty of good, old-fashioned cheating, nothing less. There should be an asterisk next to their SB win against the Bolts.

They can put an asterisk by it but we still lost and still don't have a ring.

I'd take the asterisk over an empty trophy case anyday.
