If we lose Gordon you can take to the bank we will draft another instead of going with Dontrez,Ekeler and JJ.
If we let Gordon walk, of course we'll sign/draft a replacement for him. But the question is if we spent that money on the line instead of a giant contract for Gordon, would the team be better off because our RB might have better holes and our QB might have more time to pass? And would the replacement back be more durable?

I have no problem with our backup RBs, use up his rookie deal, franchise him once, then let him walk. Wash, rinse, repeat. By then he is 28 and will only normally have a good year yr or 2 left anyway. Why overpay for that? RB is the easiest position to fill in the NFL, even if you have to go to a committee.

Looking at mocks this year, you could have a guy like Bryce Love sitting there in round 5. If that's the case, jump on Gordon insurance and groom it. If he gets injured you're covered. If he stays through the tag and walks, you have a very low tread replacement ready to go.

Love is the same size as Ekeker. Thinking they would want another RB with more size and there are plenty in this draft.

I realize we still have him another year but why sign a guy like Ingram instead of signing Gordon? Either we keep Gordon with a tag or whatever or let him go and draft another

Pretty much the way I see it. There are quite a few bigger backs w/vision, PB chops, power, receiving ability, etc that will be available rounds 5 - UDFA.

which current backup can handle the feature back role if Gordon is lost for multiple games? Ekeler proved he can't- and ended up missing multiple games from concussion and knee after the last time they tried that. JJ has some potential but hardly proven to carry a full load for multiple games. Detrez is just a guy. Adding a vet FA makes the committee. The main benefit to another Gordon contract is you know exactly what you have with him and don't have to groom him. Over paying is never a good idea, but going rate for a productive back isn't horrible in the big scheme.

Injury insurance for Gordon, and Ingram won't break the bank and has been productive. Drafting another has to be the long term plan, but guys that can both run and catch well are harder to find.

I'd give Gordon no more than 4 years at around $10 mil per.

I don't see all that many feature backs in the nfl anymore. Not that long ago 20 touches was light duty. Now only 6 backs had more than 20 touches a game avg with Elliot leading the way at 25 a game. Next was Gurley at only 22.5 Gordon? 18.8. Split those into a committee. We really need to spend 5MM per on an insurance policy for maybe 9 touches a game? Fix the oline issues. Good lines make a lot of backs look good. Damien Williams was a washout In Miami and could t find a home. KC cuts Hunt, gets an injury and signs him off the street and he looked great, played great in the playoffs, and earned a 2 yr deal worth 8MM. Same thing in Pitt. Deangelo, Bell, Conner....whoever. They all produce like crazy. RB is the easiest spot to fill if you have a matching style/scheme and a line that blocks well.

I would hope that having an ex rb coach as our head coach would translate to being able to find and utilize young, lower round, rookie deal backs effectively enough to not have to pay for one injury prone, work horse veteran.
