I don't think most Colts fans wanted to get rid of Rivers. There was, though, at least a bitter, vocal minority that never liked him. And it didn't matter how much better he made the team by playing for it. They had long memories, and they remembered that when Rivers was a Charger, their team came off second best whenever they played against him. He used to be a Colt killer

If the referees are impartial, Rivers rarely has to try to win the game with last-minute heroics. But the refs never gave the Chargers a break when he was on the team. He regularly played with his back to the wall, and he knew he wasn't going to get help. If the refs could find a way to screw the Chargers when they were playing a big NFL team, they would. So Riverhad to try to win on a wing and a prayer sometimes.
This is a problem the Chargers will continue to have. They have a small fan base. The NFL has little or no motivation to satisfy it. So when they play teams like the Steelers and Cowboys and Packers they will always come off on the losing end of any controversial call. Sometimes, the refs will invent penalties to sabotage the Chargers.
When Rivers played for the Colts, there was not much need for hero ball because I think that the Colts owner is more respected than Spanos. The owner's reputation and credibility probably matter in ways that few of us as fans realize

You wanted PR to consistently march the team down field in crunch time with that group?
