We need to upgrade RT, DL, ILB, CB play. Some of these players may already be Chargers. Punter is not.
The Aztec's MVP can flip the field with adequate blocking & coverage. That can result in W's in otherwise close games.
We do need a quality punter. When the best in college history is available, he should be in consideration.
If Araiza is worth 10, 12, 15 yards of net field position every punt, thats pretty valuable. I mean, if the team can take Craig Mager and Tre Pipkins in R3 - they surely can take Matt Araiza in R3.

I get the Chargers have needs and a Punter probably is down the list: IDL RT, CB1, maybe another IDL, RB... but many ways to find talent

I would feel lot better about picking Araiza in R3 if two things happen
        1) the comp pick for Rayshawn Jenkins is in fact a 4th rounder as Nick Korte speculates it might be

        2) JoJo Wooten is signed by the Bears to be their GM

Actually, I think Staley knew he had shit for a punting game, and had better faith in the 4th down conversion. Long rarely flipped the field, or outkicked the coverage, very inconsistent, and slow get-off. If he had a decent punter who could pin the other team, and a defense that could get a 3 and out, he probably would punt more often. I'm all for getting Araiza.

Complimentary football, has to be in all three phases. While the defense needs a whole lot of players, So too, does our special teams.

In case we miss out on Araiza, here's a hometown boy who played at Colorado St. who might be a nice consolation prize. Might be had in round 6 or so.

I’m skeptical of a punter/kicker from Colorado just because of the elevation, but if he’s legit, I could get behind it.

He has the slowest get-off I’ve ever seen in a punter. It seems like he was always within half a second of getting blocked. And then when he got it off the result was pretty poor. I know he’s considered something of a leader, but we need to upgrade at that position.

Let's be real though. If Araiza didn't play for the Aztecs would we be pining for him as much?

Myself I don't care where the players come from. Being an Aztec doesn't make me want them anymore than any other players.
I'm just wondering if there is some homering going on here. Unless we kill it in free agency I don't see us being able to draft a punter in the second round.

He was the team's MVP, as the punter, on a ranked team, and 1st team All-American. He doesn't need youtube videos to prop him up.
