The NFL and the Players Association have agreed that the per-team salary cap for the 2016 season will be slightly above $155 million, league sources told ESPN's Ed Werder.

The 2015 salary cap was set at $143.28 million, meaning this would be the third consecutive season that the cap has increased by at least $10 million.

Sources told ESPN in December that league officials informed teams that the cap would be between $150 million and $153.4 million.

I don't see the salary cap going up as being that significant. Who would we have signed with all the cap space we had? Adding that much more on a weak FA crop really doesn't help that much. And throwing obscene money at players usually backfires.

Ask the Dolphins who threw silly money at Suh, and now are wondering if they can get him to negotiate a new deal.

We got the money. Go big at LT. Sign Cordy Glenn as our big splash. Move Dunlap to RT. Sign Bolden WR. Iloka SS. Resign Gates, Robinson CB, Addae S. Cut Scifres and draft or bring in a punter. Find a FB and blocking TE later in the draft.

Plenty of room to go after a couple O-linemen, a safety and maybe a wr if the right fit is there. Focus draft on Defense and depth.

Agree with this approach. FA WRs are just a crap shoot going into a new offense and I wouldn't give a huge contract for 1.

No offense, but Rivers is really, really good and we should really build around him.

that's been their stated goal pretty much every year since he took over for Brees- yet the only time it kinda works is when they build solid OL and running game for him. And even then, can't even win the AFC Championship game, much less a Super Bowl.

None of our position groups are so good that a top talent would be a waste. We need a receiver, the question is do you draft one at 3 overall? I personally don't see the value there but if we drafted a Treadwell I wouldn't consider it a waste. You could also argue that we desperately need interior o line but, there is always good value in round 2 and 3 for them. This year the same goes for DL. The best value in my opinion for #3 overall is to trade out and grab more picks in a draft that has plenty of value in our main areas of need in rounds 1-3. Gates was undrafted. 32 teams considered a 7th rounder too risky for him. After the draft the only concern on where they were picked is between the gm and the agent for negotiations and contract length.

Seems like they are intent on bringing Gates back and filling out the TE depth chart with nobodies behind him, while losing Green who was supposed to replace him and the only 2 blocking TEs on the roster in Phillips and Johnson. All things considered, I think I would prefer they re-sign Green and convert him to full time WR to backfill Floyd's role. He has the speed and height to be a mismatch downfield. Maybe still needs some refining of running routes and to learn to handle the jump balls, but Rivers needs 1 of those big guys and we've now lost both of VJ and Floyd with no viable replacement. A rookie won't do much his 1st year and we saw how hard it was for Herndon and Williams to step in this year and Inman was even still inconsistent in his 2nd year.

No way is Ladarius a WR. He can barely separate at TE, imagine him lined up against starting corners. He's an overrated one dimensional TE

He's taller than most corners and can leap pretty high. Maybe he'd catch a lot of high passes? It seemed to work for Floyd.

The problem with Green at WR is the same as him at TE. He is not a good route runner. If Green can't get open as a TE, there is little hope he can get open as a WR. CB are the best coverage guys on the field, TE draw the S and LB in coverage.

Green runs very straight line on his routes, with little wiggle or creativity. He gets most of his catches on longer, slower developing passes off of play action, that freeze the D and let him use his speed to run away from defenders. But if he has to get open on his own, on regular passing plays, he has gotten better, but is just not a good enough route runner.

The problem is that he may draw a lot of money in FA. The combine times of the TE were not that great. None of this years crop is going to show the speed to split the S in a 2 deep zone with speed, which Green can do off of play action. So, someone will ignore the fact that he is not a good route runner, fall in love with him on jump balls and on his play action routes, plus the fact that he is probably the fastest TE in the NFL, and pay him a dump truck full of money.
