Staley has done a fine job with the Rams this season. His defense only surrendered over 30 points once this season so far. Any guess as to who was calling the plays against Staley in that game? The answer is Brian Daboll.
The Whittier Daily News article cited in this thread is just crazy.
It fails to see how the conservative offense contributed to some of the defensive issues and how by fixing the offense, we will really end up fixing the defense to at least some degree.
The suggestion that our defense could switch to a 3-4 to maximize player strengths is very nearly the polar opposite of what should be happening with our current roster. I like the 3-4 in general, but not with our current roster. I do not see a good fit there. I hate the idea of Bosa as a 3-4 DE. And who are going to be the OLBs in a 3-4. We have Nwosu and that is all that is of starting level ability. Who is the dominant two-gapping NT in a 3-4 for us? Nobody.
And the notion that we could keep Steichen for the sake of continuity misses the whole point of firing Lynn--needing to get the most out of Herbert and not calling so many early down running plays. It is Lynn and Steichen that failed. Steichen already showed his awful in game tactical awareness on multiple occasions this season. Characterizing him as incompetent at times is not overstating the problem. That is actually a pretty fair description of Steichen.
Daboll's in game tactical superiority will help the offense and help the defense some. A more aggressive DC will also help the defense some. The focus of the team moving forward should be on maximizing Herbert. Through Herbert, we can win a Super Bowl. Everyone has seen what he can do. Daboll is the most likely candidate to maximize Herbert given his play calling and offensive killer instinct. Daboll also witnessed first hand the OL transformation in Buffalo, so it seems that the impact of that transformation would not be lost on him.
Staley is a good coach and should have a bright future, but Daboll is the obvious best choice.

Yes. Ken also coached Cam Newton to an MVP in Cam's third season.

Meanwhile, Gus admittedly kept his defenses simple, because he believes that when a player doesn't have to think that much, they can fly around faster and read and react. And while that may be true to some extent, a simpler and pared-down defense is also much easier for the opponent to prepare for, diagnose, and exploit.

What interesting about that match up between Bills and Rams
Both offense took turns being sloppy getting sacked and turning it over.
Bills went up 28-3 midway through 3rd quarter. Goff intercepted and sacked.
And then Rams took the lead with 29 straight points. Allen got intercepted and sack fumble.
Bills finished the game with Allen TD drive to win 35-32.
Who has it better than us?

Staley sounds like a good candidate. Not a ling coaching history but seems like a bright mind. Being a head coach requires a lot though as a leader of an entire team. He may be a high risk high reward guy though. Daboll or him seem like our target guys.
if Rams lose this game (currently on) then do we pull the trigger or wait for buff to lose? I think if Staley is clearly THE GUY then you dont let the Texans get the opportunity to offer.

The game against the Packers isn't one for a portfolio, but it was more of Rodgers at the top of his game. Staley does have the best D, so I don't think the game is going to hurt him that much, but I don't think he's going to get picked up by Houston or Philly.
