Chargers OT Bryan Bulaga's status unknown for season opener

      Gavino Borquez
      September 6, 2021 2:38 pm PT

The Chargers will head into the 2021 season with a completely revamped offensive line that features starters at four spots.

However, the only returner from last season, right tackle Bryan Bulaga, might not be available for this upcoming Sunday’s matchup against The Washington Football Team.
The status of Bulaga, who is currently dealing with a hip flexor issue, will be determined when the team starts practicing, according to head coach Brandon Staley. If the veteran can’t play, Storm Norton would then get the start at right tackle.

Signed last offseason, Bulaga was expected to be the heart and soul on a fairly inexperienced offensive line but instead, he spent the majority of the season on the sidelines – making 10 starts, only playing 37.87% of the offensive snaps.

The talent of Bulaga is there, but so is the injury history. If the 32-year old can’t consistently stay healthy, the team may decide to cut ties with him before he enters the final year of his contract in 2022.

Update: Bulaga was practicing during open portion to media on Monday

Now look, Joe has absolutely nothing against Cynthia Frelund, the NFL Network’s resident statgirl. What Joe does have an issue with is her analysis. The first four letters of the last word in the previous sentence pretty much sum up […]

Article makes sense. I'll give it up that she looks good but she is getting paid well on TV for a reputable sports station to not know what she is talking about lol.

Never seen her do a Fantasy segment.

Doubt you need anybody to tell you what you already know, but why do we care? Lets just let the games play out and see who's left standing end of season. It's very hard to be plugged in and invested to an NFL team as its own hardcore, loyal, intelligent fans found right here on powder blue. The Athletic does a much better job of deep diving than most along with PFF but most media/television programing is just for ratings and mass consumption only, not to be taken seriously. General public, even those paid well to give informed opinions, have no idea the work Staley putts in, he is everywhere not just on the field or classroom but in the ear of Telesco. You can measure that by free agent signings and 2021 Draft class (compared to previous years with Lynn/McCoy) they've bonded and formed a collective partnership that has targeted specific weaknesses and shortcomings, like OL, Edge, Special Teams, Secondary etc.... its just a damn tough opening schedule to navigate and scare tissue still remains to be determined..

This got me thinking so I looked it up. In college, I saw him lined up on the left side against RT. I’m guessing they will move him around to create a disadvantage

From ESPN Bold Predictions for NFL season

                    18. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers finally gain a foothold in the Los Angeles market if ...

... QB Justin Herbert stays healthy and expands on his NFL rookie-record 31 touchdown passes. It will help if he's kept upright by an offensive line that went through an overhaul this offseason and the defense holds leads better. The Chargers lost four games last season in which they held double-digit leads, and have 16 one-score losses over the past two seasons.

                    Breakout candidate: Jerry Tillery, DT

Tillery, a first-round pick of the Chargers in 2019, says he's in the best shape of his life. He should excel in coach Brandon Staley's new defensive scheme. He spent the summer working out with a trainer in Hawaii and has taken off some weight. Tillery, who had five sacks combined in his first two seasons, said he worked on footwork and getting faster at everything.

With the loss of LB Melvin Ingram III, the Chargers need another pass-rush threat to complement LB Joey Bosa -- Tillery, who had 14 quarterback hits last season, could be it.
play1:37Why Justin Herbert will take a big leap forward this season

Field Yates calls Chargers QB Justin Herbert a "phenomenal value" for fantasy managers.

Bold prediction: The Chargers will make the playoffs -- and maybe win the division title.

Staley has reenergized this group, which enters the season healthy. Major injuries have struck the Chargers in training camp in the past, so improved health, a maturing Herbert at quarterback and the addition of a coach who led the Rams to the NFL's No. 1 defense last season will pave the way for a Chargers breakthrough. -- Shelley Smith

TT? You mean TP (Trey Pipkins?) Technically on the depth chart yes, but the 1st option they will put in is Swing Tackle Storm Norton. Trey is last line of defense.
