And Center too -Creed Humphrey and the player you mentioned at RG, Trey Smith

Many teams passed on Smith as he had health concerns.

So why hasn't he been more involved in the offense then?

That is NOT an overwhelming endorsement for MW!

It's a strategy to keep his numbers down, reducing the amount it will take to resign him.

Mike does that on his own dropping passes

Or frustration on MW part a agreeable deal to extend him has yet to be made.

Anyone’s guess really, why after having great success spreading the ball around against the Eagles, especially the TE’s Lombardi went a different direction in Vikings game? One week he opens up the offense next week shuts it down :facepalm1:

KC is starting rookie OC (Humphrey), ORG (Smith), and a second year/COVID opt out/basically rookie ORT (Niang)
They we’re are physically developed with monster strength profiles coming out while Jaimes was not.

Indeed. Loved him as a prospect. I had him @ #19 overall.

                        Doesn’t answer the question.

                          16. Teams are taking the deep part of the field away and forcing Herbert — and the offense as a whole — to execute play after play after play in the short and intermediate area of the field. Staley can describe this strategy so eloquently because it is the same philosophy he implements against elite quarterbacks. The hope is that opposing offenses will eventually make a mistake when forced to drive the field — a missed assignment in protection, a dropped ball from a receiver, a misfire from the quarterback. Sound familiar? That is exactly what has happened to the Chargers over these three losses. Of opposing coverages taking the deep part of the field away from Herbert and the Chargers pass catchers, Staley said: “Just from nine games, you’ve seen a concerted effort to keep them out of there. They’ve done that in a variety of ways.”

                          17. The protection point Staley brings up is also an important one. And I think it has been lost or glossed over by many when assessing the reasons for Herbert’s low air yards per attempt. To give Herbert and the receivers enough time to connect on throws in the deep part of the field, the pass protection must hold up. Schofield and Norton form a distinct weakness on the right side of the Chargers’ offensive line — one that has been exposed in known passing situations. (See: The duo allowed 17 pressures in the loss to the Patriots.) Pushing the ball downfield more often means exposing that right side more often, and sacks are the ultimate drive killers. The Chargers, schematically, are trying to mitigate that weakness. Quick game. Bootlegs to the flat. Screens. These are all ways to help out a weakness on the offensive line. They also lead to lower air yards per attempt.

The strategy has more or less worked. The Chargers rank fourth in pressure rate allowed and seventh in sack rate this season, according to TruMedia, and they have maintained a level of consistency in keeping Herbert clean despite injuries. They rank sixth in pressure rate allowed since Week 6 despite that poor performance against New England. The shot plays have to come with specific designs that give Herbert and the receivers the time they need — primarily max protection out of the play action. And even then, the protection is not fully reliable. On Sunday, the Chargers tried to hit Mike Williams on a deep post on the second play of the game off a play-action pocket-movement play call. Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks read the play out of man coverage and got home for the sack.
