In fact, from what I read he kind of needs to be challenged mentally due to his high intelligence and this new complicated offense might be just what he needs.
TG
And the comment ARians made about QBs needing fewer OCs - he is probably right. But keeping Lynn and Steichen on staff for the sake of Herbert continuity would have been the worst reason to keep Lynn.

I agree. And coaches looking at tape will be looking at Herbert's deficiencies in an offense they no longer run with a line they no longer have. Herbert really only had one bad game last season - against the Dolphins. Even Rivers had 1-2 bad games every season, even when he was a grizzled vet. Unfortunately they were usually against the Chiefs or Raiders or for some odd reason, the Dolphins. We all know what I am talking about. You could tell from the first throw that he was off and it was going to be a clunker.
I have zero concerns about Herbert. Going to be great.

Regarding Herbert, I listened to Staley say that during the walk throughs, Staley's defense did something unique and that Herbert spotted it and adjusted accordingly. I assume that is just one instance where he will improve; meaning I expect Herbert will improve this second season. Whether that means his raw statistics are better than last season, I'm not sure. But I think he will show significant growth in reading defenses, protection calls, and calling audibles, which should translate to more wins.
