They lost mathews/woodhead, were down to their 5th starting center, and Rivers played with the ruptured back disc, and still they were in playoff contention week #17

QB driven league...... this team will go as far as Justin takes them. He isn't playing his best football. And some of that is probably due to Allen being out and OL injury and his ribs. He has also not converted on some easy throws. And he also isn't getting great targets from some of his teammates at times. Chemistry between him and Palmer has been off.
Under Staley they went OL Rd1 two years in a row and add solid veteran OL. They have been more right than wrong on reworking this OL and doing it rather quickly under this young HC.
And the special teams has been better and more consistent than previous HC had them playing.
I don't think some other coach like a Payton has them any better than 5-2 any way. It's hard to go 7-0.
Payton career started with 8-8, 8-8, 3-13. You fans would have been screaming fire him for those 3 years. He also went 7-9, 7-9, 7-9 from 2014-2016. Again you would have screamed for his firing then. But now the grass is greener and you want Sean on your sideline. It's been 13 years since he won that SB.
We'll see how things play out. Some coaches take a while to get it down. Bill Belichick's record in his first 3 seasons as a coach with the Browns was 7-9, 6-10 and 6-10. Imagine the commentary here with that record...

Payton does have a ring and did have a lot of good years with NO, but his teams also did an awful lot of "Chargering" during the playoffs. Of course, being in the playoffs is better than not.

Who has it better than us?

Im hopeful Staley can manage up and get them to make the decisions he wants. But if he is already being a yes man. The locker room knows it. If all they hire are yes men HCs wouldn't they all lose the locker room because the players know they HC brown noses the owners. Setting up their coaches for defeat by undermining their ability to lead the team because players don't respect the yes man HC.
we need a bobby ross type of coach..... tough in all phases......

Perhaps Peyton inspires some confidence because he came as advertised. He was an offensive guru that walked the walk. He installed a complex and very productive offense that set passing records.
Staley came advertised as a defensive guru but his defense has basically sucked since he got here. Cant even handle the basics, stopping the run. I think that is where he is losing credibility and also his game management.

When this season concludes, I shall want Coach Staley sat down and told his choice at DC isn't cutting it. A veteran like Vic Fangio or even a Wade Phillips is going to be brought in as defensive coordinator to bring a life and personality and force of will to that defense, which it presently lacks, week-in, week-out. When consistency is brought to the defense, the team wins will become self-evident.
