    :wtf:
If the Chargers are more than $2m AAV apart per year with MW - they need to let him test the waters. I doubt MW is going to get 25m. I think his AAV will be 17.5 give or take.

MW is not efficient football. Lombardi needs to optimize our talent, not work to make sure his prognostications come true.

      2. falling in love * don't think anyone is going to confuse team Tommy John w/the Godfather, and.... why do you make a proclamation that you like to take care of your own ?? of course you do, but you don't need to make it a public anthem, 'specially when you have a handful or so of your own FAs that are borderline value signings, and that actually might continue to cement the team Tommy John legacy of overpaying for their own. this is where team Tommy John needs to channel their inner AJ and take a page out of Staley's book, and insist on value signings in FA, or.... just walk away, Charger or not.

      3. possible but not probable * way too much hopium on the team Tommy John resume, signing aging vets that produce for a season or so and then kaput, we're left holding the FA$ bag and limp into the close of the season and fail to make the playoffs on the way to yet another ho hum .500 season.

would love to see Fleet implement an add on here where any poster raising the flag for his said player, and w/the caveat "if he can stay healthy," that it prints in red, coz it's that significant. you can't hope your way around an aging, oft injured vet. you can minimize Linsley's back, but if you're the GM you're more lucky than good if you're relying on Qberry or the like, to get you thru the playoffs.

      4. use FA to fill needs * case in point, we have a viable NFL starting RT on the roster, but for some reason the majority here only have eyes for him @LG ?? picking a RT @17 is a reach, @least by most accounts. MW was a reach, Tillery was a reach, Fluker was a reach, and there were/are others. not only do you need to get value w/your FA signings, you need to get value w/your draft picks.

draft capital is just like money. if you squander your FA monies, you will end up w/a watered down talent base on your roster. if you draft MW @7 and leave Ryan Ramcyzk sitting there, you have watered down your talent base, aka Jacob Hestered your roster. you can say it doesn't matter where a player was drafted, and then you will be depleting your roster talent and lessening your odds to play in a SB.

      5. Herbert

      6. Staley * dude has a bit of a bruise after last season in that he was heralded as a defensive mastermind, and w/an offensive background on top of that, and.... he failed miserably on defense.

and that was w/the services of both Bosa and Derwin, and after the forum crows let it be known for months how much better we would be w/Derwin back.... Weddle didn't get us much of anywhere, and Derwin is not the difference maker that many of you are heralding him as. he's very good, but Staley's scheme did not carry the day/season.

bottom line is that we need both, a top five or ten offense and (scoring) defense, and.... 'tis nothing that Gus Bradley or RR didn't accomplish.... pfffft.

      7. desperately seeking * where can we find good value in a trading partner. how do we acquire OJ Howard or the like. Coupon Tom is not known as Trader Tom. does young John have the reins too tight, or are they rightly hesitant as they are young guns who have been outflanked by wiser, craftier, more cunning old school GMs, and they are very cautious moving in those circles ??

      8. the two minute rule * a good reason to resign MW. another good reason to make sure we get another top shelf pass catcher/blocker @RB. a cautionary tale 'bout resigning the likes of Justin Jones or having a knee jerk reaction to our run defense, by signing someone who is tops in run defense, but offers no pass rush. 'tis also a cautionary tale for someone like Drue Tranquill.

my hesitation w/the suggestion, is that it is imperative to have a good NT/IDL run stuffer to make it to third down and long, and that it is imperative to have QB efficiency to be in a position to come from behind in the last two minutes.... it's not just one or the other, as don't want to be throwing 50 something percent balls to MW most of the game, and then think I will be in range to win the game ??

      9. honest expectations * so far the expectations have largely gone unmet by Staley & Co. and our FO has a history of overrating their HC and staff.... to be con't.

      10. talent evaluation * after nine years of team Tommy John, eye think it is pretty much set in stone that they are a ho hum .500 very avg GM duo.... to be con't.

      thank you B4K,
I've actually been agreeing alot with you lately but this post I'm not agreeing with much here.

      I mean some i do.
Telesco hasn't been as good as we would like. Agree. He isn't very good manipulating the draft of acquiring extra picks for letting players go or getting that key trade. Sure he has some so-so picks but every GM does, posters here just ignore that and think TT is a bad GM. He really isn't, just could be better.

Now to LG. Fieler was signed to play LG. Pittsburgh played him at RT due to injury. He did well, good for him. We didn't sign him for that. They believe in Pipkins who has been slow to develope and seems to have turned the corner. Hopefully.

Bulaga was the huge mistake. Moving Fieler to RT could be an option but the staff doesn't seem to want to do that. Do we know better than they do? We had a damn good OL coach who left for Miami and he didn't move him either.

Draft a RT..I don't agree there aren't good options there and we don't need to use a first rounder on one. Or we can trade down. Another TT downfall.

As for overpaying for his own.....who exactly did he overpay for to resign? He got Ekeler cheap. Keenan isn't over paid, Bosa is getting the edge rusher rate, he didn't over pay for Henry and let him walk instead....I mean who are you referring to?

You wanting to retain Denzel .....who when healthy is a good player I agree, but he was always hurt. Was he worth keeping playing 50-60% of the time? He did well this year but it's his first and healthiest season ever. How do you know? Roll the dice? Should we do that with Justin Jackson too?

You talk about signing vets for value,.... bro you keep bringing up Sheldon who fits your discription above. "If he can stay healthy" and an aging vet but yet you still want him to be our NT.
He didn't start not 1 game last year, and missed multiple games and has throughout his mediocre career yet you keep banging that drum.
He has been injured a lot more than MW and Lindlay who you keep calling injury concerns but he isn't?

I like OJ Howard too but he has really underachieved and he worries me there to pay him a decent contract. He is a 2 year deal guy for me because he neds to prove it. But I like his potential. He just hasn't been as good as Ertz or as reliable dispute him being younger.

Mel Ingram to me is your MW. You never liked him because where he was drafted but he is said to have the best hands on the team.
Not my proclamation, that's Keenan's. Coaches love him, team mates love him. Coaches let Mel walk and wasn't signed by his old DC.

All I know is teams that win SBs usually have a very good WR corps. NE didn't all the time but did have some good ones in Welker and Moss, Edelman and Brady had that in Tampa Bay and had Gronk in both places.
      Losinh MW creates another hole.

Ekeler gets plenty of passes. He had 94 targets, 70 receptions (2nd most of his career) along with a career high in carries (206) which is a lot of work for him. He isn't LT in many ways but particularly in size as LT was 220 lbs.

Agree we need another RB who can do that type of work. Point is Ekeler was used a lot so it isn't like they weren't being efficient.

we are already paying big money to Bosa and Keenan, and will be paying big money to Derwin and Herbert before too very long.

if we tag MW, then we might not have a complementary back for Ek, we might not be able to pull a rabbit out of our hat w/someone like Cook @TE, and we might be looking @McKitty and maybe Parham. we might not have enough draft capital to upgrade @ED, RT, CB and the IDL ?? we might not have enough monies to sign an IDL, let alone two of 'em. we def would not have monies enough to go after one of the high priced FA WRs or CBs.

is MW's talent really going to erase the deficiencies in the other position groups ?? signing him affects the talent pool in up to @least six other position groups.... RB, TE, OL, IDL, ED, CB.... not to mention we still have to pay attention to P, S and possibly WR.

don't see how retaining MW and our other FAs doesn't half guarantee us another .500 or so season.... where is the improvement/SB differential coming from ??

last year we parted ways w/Denzel, Mel and Casey, and how did it leave our D then.... tough call on what leaves your roster w/the best chance to proceed to a SB.
The Rams just won a SB paying for players. One a 40nyear old OT. Sure they won't be able to keep them all but do you want a Chapionship or a consistant division winner?

I think MW is a vital part here and Herbert said he wants him back. Do you tell your QB to Fuck off, you get Palmer, Guyton and a draft pick who may work out? Hec I'd love to have Jameson or Burks but only if we lose him.a.d then I'm not expecting the production from them we got from MW in year one. But I didn't think Jefferson would be great from the get go. So it's a question mark.

You can't afford studs everywhere and in a passing league, WR matters and he wants his guy back. They can afford him.

But NO I won't pay 25 million and doubt he is asking that since he has said he wants to be back and doesn't like change. As someone said I think he gets 15-17 mil from us.

This article noting Bosa transitioning from DE to OLBr makes me wonder if we are going to go with a 3/4 base next season

Bosa is not a DE or an OLB. He is an Edge. We play modern defensive football.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

Who’s the best 5 tech in the draft this year? Who is the best 3-4 OLB in the draft this year? Are there any of either?

The Bolts use neither. Because the players with the skills needed for these positions are too rare. A 5 tech with the size and strength to two gap and then be a quality pass rusher was very rare. (The Bolts use a 4i DT). An OLB with the size, speed and agility to rush the passer or effectively drop into coverage was very rare.

An edge is a pass rush specialist with edge setting skills a bonus. Their biggest job is to go get the QB. Occasionally they’ll drop into coverage to make the QB have to think a little longer. And pass coverage is best done with DBs. Who occasionally rush the passer to try to fool the pass blocking.

The old 3-4 concepts have been modernized with schemes and players who are available in the draft in sufficient quantities to go around.

                        GREAT point Blue!
SO many plays, SO many defenders over thinking, over running, losing edge contain, etc.
Better discipline promotes better outcome. How many times early in the season did we have scores taken off the board due to mental breakdowns? Once it got sorted, the unit got better.
                        Now it's the D's turn.

Might just need better players. Though I thought Kyzir White played well - if he can be upgraded, all for it. Same with Nwosu and Jones. Joseph and Harris - already need to be upgraded.
