Sometimes it was a 3rd safety (Gilman) sometimes it was a 4th CB (Campbell).
    Neither was very good.

In my last mock, I drafted a very good safety (Bryan Cook) in the 3rd round. He'll be a solid starter by mid-season.
My big nickel would be: JC Jackson (outside), Derwin James (big slot), ASJ (outside). Bryan Cook and Adderly would be the split safeties.
My small nickel would be: JC Jackson (outside), ASJ (slot), and Michael Davis (outside). Derwiin and Adderly are the safeties.

Good stuff boltnut, so at the moment we can't even play dime without using Gilman/Webb or Campbell.
Gotta get a DB with the first two picks (or 3 picks if a trade down).
ASJ's concussions and not knowing what he or Davis will be is also a concern.
As a group, still not what Staley had with the Rams.

Remember that Staley was only with the Rams for 1 year. Just because they were the #1 D, doesn't mean that they were exactly what Staley wanted. In the 1st year, you are always working with what was leftover from the last guy. Sometimes it works well, but sometimes, no matter what a coach does, the new coach can't make all the pieces fit. Sometimes they can (Staley with the Rams). Just because he did something with them, doesn't mean that is what he WANTED to do. It may have been what he had to do.

Rams and we played mostly zone D. Offseason moves this offseason point to playing mostly man to man. Looks more like we are going to what Staley wanted to do, but never had the players to implement.

agreed, was just making the point we don't have the talent in the secondary or front line he had with the Rams
we are also a starting 3 man front DE short

The 3rd guy is really only a role or part-time player to most 34 teams. Most 34 teams play so much 42, that they only need two players most of the time.

Staley just told Haley that JC can play the Slot.

                I did not know that.
We do not play modern football.

I have been thinking all along that he would be strictly an "Island CB."

My ears perked up when Staley said that.

                      My blind spot I guess.

Mine also. I thought ASJ was the only serious current option in the slot. That's better. Best will be a designated hitter from the draft.

Staley's going to try to build his defense around what his best players do best.
That's why I think Staley would like to get Derwin more involved... whether that's slot or dime-backer.
Last year's problem was with secondary depth... specifically Gilman/Campbell.

If you move Derwin up more frequently, that means more Gilman @safety.
That's why I've been zeroing in on safety in the 3rd... over CB.
If you can get a starting-caliber safety, Derwin can play slot. That kicks ASJ outside... and Michael Davis becomes your 4th CB (over Campbell).
You kind of fix 2 problems with one pick (safety).
