I don't think there's any question that Herbert is more valuable to the Chargers than James. I'm sure the Chargers know that; I'm sure James knows that. There is ZERO chance that Herbert leaves the building. OTOH, if James/agent dig their heels in, and the Chargers deem such money demands too steep, I can certainly see a scenario where James is no longer with the team. Even if, as some have said, he gives in - temporarily - and plays out the final year of his contract here, he always has the option of becoming a FA next off-season. And in that scenario, he would almost certainly get what he wants, contract-wise.
Maybe? I still think the guaranteed money part will be a hang-up for most of the NFL teams out there. So unless a team has a large salary cap available funds situation I don't think his market would be there for $100 mil guaranteed.
Just saw the news report of his signing. I guess we were worried about nothing. LOL. Given his agents previous negotiations I was preapred for the worst case scenario. Calmer heads prevailed here. On to the season.
Yeah future contracts have to keep in mind Herbert's stratospheric contract. and personally I'd rather keep Herbert than Derwin...not that I dont like Derwin but IMO Herbert's position is WAY MORE important.
Comments to Ian’s tweet are brutal. Lots of tweets about overpaying for a guy who misses half the games
Understandable. Not only has Derwin missed half his career to injury, the Chargers' defense sucked last year. If he's that much of a game-changer, the defense shouldn't be that bad. He's going to have to prove to me this season he's not overrated.

I get you but funny none the less. He's one of 11 players out there and our supporting cast dropped off for numerous games last season due to injuries and such. I look at Bosa and James as 1.5 players. The combined duo gives us an effective 12 man defense vs. 11.
