Exactly. He knows two guys are going at it, he’s not going to diss either by shouting out the other.

COSTA MESA, Calif. — The Chargers held their seventh practice of training camp Wednesday morning at Jack R. Hammett Sports Complex.

Here are my observations, notes and takeaways:

              A lighter day
The Chargers scaled practice back significantly Wednesday after two straight days in pads on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday’s practice was also by far their longest practice of camp. The Chargers were not in pads Wednesday. There were only three team periods. And a number of veterans got the day off from team drills — center Corey Linsley, left guard Matt Feiler, wide receiver Keenan Allen, edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack and linebacker Kyle Van Noy. Kicker Dustin Hopkins also got the day off, and rookie James McCourt took all the field goal attempts during special teams drills.

Still, there was plenty of action to get into.

The Chargers opened team periods with red zone seven-on-seven. Justin Herbert found tight end Donald Parham Jr. in the front corner of the end zone from 20 yards out on the second rep. Herbert sensed a mismatch with corner Bryce Callahan defending Parham, and Parham used his big frame to shield off Callahan and haul in the touchdown. Parham is having a great camp, and it is clear he will once again be a prominent piece in the Chargers’ downfield passing attack.

Herbert then had a third-down-conversion completion to Austin Ekeler over the middle and also connected with Mike Williams on a crossing route. Williams nearly scored after the catch but was forced out of bounds just shy of the goal line.

Callahan responded with a fine play to close out the first-team series in seven-on-seven. Joshua Palmer ran an out route, and Callahan forced an incompletion at the goal line with tight coverage. The defensive sideline celebrated loudly after this pass breakup.

DeAndre Carter then caught two touchdowns from Chase Daniel while working with the second-team offense. Carter, who the Chargers signed in free agency, is proving to be an offensive weapon on top of what he brings as a kick and punt returner. Carter has four touchdowns in seven-on-seven red zone over the past three practices — two from Easton Stick and two from Daniel. He also caught two passes from Stick in Tuesday’s second-team offense two-minute drill.

On Wednesday, Carter first beat Deane Leonard on a go route down the right sideline for a 20-yard touchdown. Then he beat Michael Davis on a corner route, making a leaping catch before toe-tapping both feet down.

“He is a very good receiver,” coach Brandon Staley said of Carter. “He is not just a return specialist. This guy can play offense. He can play in the slot. He can play out wide. He’s very good after the catch.”

Next up was 11-on-11 red zone. Will Clappreplaced Linsley at center. Jamaree Salyerreplaced Feiler at left guard. Chris Rumph IIand Emeke Egbule replaced Mack and Bosa at edge rusher. And Nick Niemann replaced Van Noy at inside linebacker.

Ekeler, Joshua Kelley and rookie Isaiah Spillerall worked in with the first-team offense at running back. Kelley looked explosive, hitting the hole on a carry up the middle. And Spiller showed off some acceleration, as well, beating the defense to the edge on a pitch for a first down.

Herbert only attempted three passes in the first team’s six reps of the period. One was a screen to Ekeler. He completed to Parham on the first rep, again with Callahan in coverage. Asante Samuel Jr. had a pass breakup at the goal line on Herbert’s second attempt on the final period.

Facing the second-team offense, Breiden Fehoko had a tackle for loss on a Spiller run. Rookie running back Kevin Marks Jr. had a fumble with the third-team offense, mishandling a shotgun handoff from Stick. Cornerback Ja’Sir Taylor recovered it. Edge rusher Jamal Davis batted one of Stick’s pass attempts at the line of scrimmage, and cornerback Brandon Sebastian almost picked it off. Then linebacker Cole Christiansen had a pass breakup in coverage on rookie receiver Trevon Bradford on the final rep of the period.

The Chargers closed practice with a short-field situational drill. The offense was at the opposing 30-yard line with 31 seconds on the clock. The first-team offense faced the second-team defense and the second-team offense faced the first-team defense, as has been the case in all the two-minute drills so far in camp.

Herbert threw over Palmer’s head down the left sideline on the opening play of the drive. Then the offense picked up 5 free yards when Davis jumped offsides and made contact with a receiver on the outside. Ekeler then dropped a pass in the flat, and Palmer could not corral a low throw over the middle from Herbert on third down. The field goal unit came on, and McCourt’s 42-yard attempt was good. McCourt also made seven of his eight kicks in the special teams period.

The second-team offense’s drive, led by Daniel, ended after two plays. Maurice Ffrench caught a pass over the middle on a crossing route to open the drive. Linebacker Damon Lloydtouched him down in bounds, and with the clock ticking down, the offense scrambled to the line of scrimmage. Daniel got the snap off with 12.5 seconds remaining, and he went for it all with a deep shot down the right sideline to Ffrench in the end zone. Adderley made an excellent read and broke on the route, picking off the throw. But he collided with Ffrench’s head as he snared the interception. Ffrench’s helmet flew off, and he was down after the play.

The trainers rushed over, and Staley ended practice. After about a minute, Ffrench got up and walked over to the team huddle without any help. Staley said afterward the French is “OK.”

This was Adderley’s second interception in as many days.

“He’s earning it in camp here,” Staley said. “He’s really flashing in the run game and in the pass game. Little things — command before the ball is snapped, helping his teammates out.”

The Chargers are off Thursday before returning Friday for the first of three practices in three days, concluding with an intra-squad scrimmage Sunday evening.

              News and notes
              • Linebacker Drue Tranquill, tight end Tre’ McKitty, safety Mark Webb Jr., cornerback Tevaughn Campbell and receiver Jason Moore Jr. all did not practice Wednesday because of injuries. Staley said all five are dealing with “soft-tissue” injuries and are “day-to-day.”

Derwin James sat out his seventh straight practice as he and his camp continue to negotiate a contract extension. James turned 26 on Wednesday. “No update on Derwin,” Staley said. “Other than: Happy birthday, Derwin.”

              • The Chargers started to incorporate gunners into their punt drills. Davis, Kemon Hall, Jalen Guyton, Leonard, Taylor, Palmer, Joe Reed and JT Woods all rotated in. Tight end Hunter Kampmoyer filled in for Tranquill on the first-team punt unit.

Kenneth Murray Jr., who is still on the PUP list after undergoing offseason ankle surgery, had his pads and helmet on while he worked out during Wednesday’s practice. When asked how close Murray is to returning, Staley said: “I’m hoping it’s some point during camp. We’re not close yet, but he is improving, and he’s getting more and more confident. Our goal for him was just to be here at some point during camp, and I think that goal is achievable.”

Yup, it can get worse......much, much worse.
Absolutely brutal at times there to be quite honest.

Parham and Palmer have stood out, according to Popper. We already know what Keenan, Mike, and Ekeler can do, so this is fantastic news.

Herb figures to have outstanding options, as far as playmakers to get the ball to, but-- with the improved protection Herb should get-- at least ONE of those options will be open, and that's all it takes.

This is where Spiller can make a difference as a receiver out of the backfield. As tough and strong a runner as he is, he can deliver some punishment to the DB unlucky enough to have to tackle him. Wearing down the opposing defense-- punishing them-- is an important component of winning games.

I have to admit having trouble keeping track of all the new faces, and especially their names, mainly on defense. Some tongue twisters. I expect it will all get less unfamiliar come final roster day. Even then, tho. Haha.

Herbert is not playing against the 3’s. Tells me their is still a nagging depth issue in secondary, that’s all.
