Such an upgrade as far as mobility goes. Taylor has mobility too but most of the time he's running for his life or commits to running 2 seconds after the snap. It might be a rough start for Herbert if the O-line doesn't gel as he's not known for having a quick release.

For there critic who values the opinion of random ex-NFL quarterbacks. Here is Chris Sims' top 5 quarterbacks and, spoiler alert, Hebert is #2:

And one more link for those that want to get to know Justin Hebert better. Mark Sanchez apparently has a show (who knew?) and talked with Herbert. It's actually really good, as far as giving you a feel for the kind of guy he is. Plus there's some board work that's kind of cool and a story about the clinching play in the Rose Bowl that I don't think had been public knowledge previously (basically, was a mistaken quick snap by the center and Herbert made a super quick improvisation to end the game).

Which is why some many young QB fail. Poor mechanics, lack of consistency.... it is the same old story that teams never seem to learn from. Teams draft a QB high, play them way too soon, and are then surprised when they fail. IT's not a surprise, it is completely predictable.

This basically means Pipkins will be starting LT next season.

lol good luck Herbert. Tyrod will get injured fast enough by Pipkins incompetence (Tyrod isn’t an ironman like Rivers) so Herbert will get to go into action quickly.

Drafting a QB in a season in which there might not even be a training camp is just so stupid.

This is reminiscent of when the Chargers reached and drafted Melvin Gordon in a terrible RB draft class “to fill a need”.

This is a horrible QB draft class and we decide to “fill a need” instead of taking one of the brilliant OT prospects and then drafting a QB next season when there will actually be OTAs and training camps to help the rookie QB entering the league.

Actually, the lack of an offseason may work to our advantage. If he had a regular offseason, there would probably be the temptation to go out and think he can be fixed in time to be ready for week 1, and then play him too soon. He'd play OK initially, get everyone's hopes up, then struggle once teams put together enough film. He won't have the foundational (mechanical) skills to be consistent, he gets discouraged and then the struggles simply build.

This way, we have the time to break down everything he does, teach him to be mechanically sound, then he is ready when he does get to play, he has the foundational work behind him to be successful. The reason that Tua and Burrows are much better QB is because they had strong fundamentals (mechanics), so when they go into practices and games, they don't have to think as much, don't have to be thinking as much, they just go out, and they are confident that when they go back to throw, the ball will go where they want it, when they want it. They can just go out and focus on the play they are running and just play.

I hope they let him sit behind Tyrod this year and soak it up while working on mechanics and learning to be a pro QB. Tyrod WILL mentor him, he is that type of guy.

The reason I'm so bummed about the pick( other than skipping an elite defender) is that had PR been our QB going into 2020, Herbert doesn't go until the second half of the 1st round, if that. It's Telesco taking guys like DJ,Chris Watt, Pipkens, Melvin G, Mike W( I'm sure there are others) before their predicted slot. Seems like he's always taking a position of need as opposed to selecting the better football players( you know, the guys that help you win football games)
Your top picks( especially guys in the top 10) need to be immediate starters and have an impact. Herbert isn't that guy( unless the team wants to throw him out there and get killed- like a Tim Couch or David Carr- and have him be out of the NFL by the end of his rookie contract)
As a fan, I'll hope the Chargers can spend the next 20 months teaching this kid some of the fundamentals he's obviously missing( quick release, pace, anticipation, etc.) The drafting of Murray helps ease the pain of this pick but at the same time, costs us a 3rd. Would we have not been better off( as many have mentioned so far here on the board) taking the better defender in Simmons and a comparable QB in Hurts in the 2nd, and keeping a hold of our valuable draft capital?
Anyway, I'll be a Justin Herbert fan when he does take the field in Powder Blues.
                          Until then......BOLT UP!
