Hi all, been lurking awhile, had some thoughts on Herbert vis a vis Staley.

Herbert's biggest weakness last year was post snap processing versus disguised coverage. Part of this is just a learning process, and his progression in pre snap diagnosis was both amazing and showed his commitment to the game.

But vs the Dolphins, Patriots, and Bills this was neutralized through scheme. It showed a massive failure in last year's coaching staff.

Lynn and Bradley clearly had no idea what was going on with those defenses and couldn't prepare Herbert properly. They probably couldn't run the scout team correctly. This means Herbert had NO experience playing vs this type of defense in practice, it was all vs the static Bradley single high defense, and it showed.

However, this is exactly the defense Staley runs and he seems to understand its strengths and weaknesses and how to attack it. Herbert will also have practice time vs the exact defense he struggled against. In this way, the coaching and scheme change can actually negate the film advantage other teams will have and may offset the sophmore slump.

Yes, I've read/heard this on reviews of Herbert's rookie season.

Though I didn't realize that Lynn was that clueless. Wouldn't that have been Shane Steichen's job to prepare Herbert for these defenses?

I agree, Staley is going to help Herbert make a big step forward, even with a year of video for DCs to review of Justin I think he will exceed expectations. Herbert has that kind of character and commitment to learning.

            Welcome to TPB.

Great first post. Hope to see many more like it.

Everyone talks about Herbert's intelligence, but he's also humble, which is equally important. It's an excellent psychological composition for a young QB.
He's mentally able to grasp complex schematics and he's got enough sense to know there's room for improvement, despite all his rookie accolades.

Staley's also intelligent but he's best known for being a great communicator. He should be able to articulate the schemes in a way Herbert can digest.
Herbert and Staley seem like a terrific match -- A QB with all the physical tools AND a capacity to learn, and a coach who understands the ins-and-outs of these modern NFL defenses.
Our quarterback is a golden god.

Herbert likes to be challenged. Staley sounds like just the person for him.

Rome wasnt built in a day, josh allen took what three years to have it all click plus having the right system makes a huge difference.

we now have film on what herbert struggled on so i guarantee he will get coaching on those issues.

if our OL performs well Herbert has nothing but upside for his second year. He will have had a lot film time to review last year. New offense again but i assume they will keep a core of the old offense too.

                    Thanks for the welcome all.

Coaching at this level is collaberative. The OC, DC, and HC should be helping each other scout and prepare. I think Steichen showed ability but lack of experience which the other top guys couldn't help him overcome through lack of talent or not keeping up with the game and how schemes interact.

This was Justin's first start as a pro.

While it was a great highlight, I don't want to see anything like this unless it's in the fourth quarter of a close playoff game.
